As tennis metaphors life so has the game sunk to deplorable depths. My dear old Dad was a shortstop in the Detroit Tiger system. He may have been the Tiger's shortstop had it not been for the ill timing of Harvey Kuenn being that man at the time. But Goose is expressing some thoughts about the game of baseball that he has some definite misgivings about.
He mentions about waiting to see if things stand the test of time. I really don't think modern tennis has withstood the test of time. It has devolved. The best player in the world is a mediocre volleyer for instance. I wonder what Goose would think of baseball players using graphite bats that are 80% bigger than the current wooden ones. I think he might say...BULLSHIT.
