Also a very strong field here. Top seeds:
    Medvedev
    Tsitsipas
    Rublev
    Fritz
    Hurkacz
    Sinner
    Norrie

This is an ATP 500 also. I made an error in the subject line.

Sinner with his effortless power, looks very good in 1st round win over Garin.

Denis takes Fritz in 3. Denis had more winners than errors. We all know how good he can be when he manages his errors well.

These last 2 tournaments are turning into a bit of a throwback week. Grigor routines Rublev in 2 sets, just playing too well for him.

Medvedev unpenatratable defense on full display vs Sinner.

Disappointing for Sinner. I saw the highlights. It seemed he couldn't break through Meddy's defence. On top of that Meddy seemed to be serving really heavily and well. I think that combination - of serving heavily, trading, and defending well, makes Meddy very hard to beat, for anyone.

Unbelievable defence from Medvedev, and great serving, but more than that. His accuracy on both groundstrokes into the corners was amazing. And when Sinner tried to hit through the ultra-consistent Medvedev rally ball, it came back just as hard. And finally, what was up with Sinner's smash? He hit at least two sitters into the bottom of the net, and one long. Soul destroying after a long rally.

I never have really noticed before his overhead issue. No doubt he did not look good with that shot. But Novak seems to struggle a bit with overheads also and certainly gets through it. Nadal has one of the very best.

Grigor next up to see if he can do anything with the Medvedev defense. Shap vs Coric in the other semi.

Medvedev gets early break. It would be difficult to find a greater contrast in easy on the eye technique vs ugly technique than these 2. Grigor's slice bh nearly as good as Roger's, but it does not bother Medvedev at all. Medvedev a brutal example of getting 1 more ball back.

Pretty much says it all. Typical Medvedev numbers, not giving hardly anything away.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of Meddy, winning comfortably in two sets in every round. The court did seem a little slow in the match against Sinner. Sinner seemed like he couldn't make much impact at all. On courts like that, if he is serving and rallying well, El Shapo will have his work cut out for sure.

No question Meddy is the strong favorite. I wish he was playing Rune.

Denis wins 1st set 6-4. The numbers show why.
