  • Race to Turin, aka year end rankings

Just looked at the so-called "Singles Race' or YTD rankings, which of course converges with the year-end rankings at the end.

    Not what we're accustomed to.

Not entirely sure if Rafa will play, given injury, fatigue and new child. So, possibly 9 is good enough.

So, FAA would be a nice surprise. And Taylor Fritz might actually be the first American in the Tour Finals, since .... I'm tempted to type Stan Smith just to provoke people, but ...

I'll guess Andy Roddick? I recall him in the WTF when it was in Shanghai, ah Andy played as recently as 2010, losing to Rafa, Berdych, Djokovic. Never made the finals.

Looks like Agassi in 1990 was last US man to win the WTF.

CORRECTION: Of course, Pistol Pete Sampras won in 1999. So it has "only" been 23 years since a US man won.

    1) Alcaraz
    2) Nadal (two Spaniards at the top )
    3) Ruud
    4) Tsitsipas
    5) Medvedev (despite no Wimby and not defending NY)
    6) Rublev (today's points not yet added0
    7) FAA (plus add today's points)
    8) Taylor Fritz (yes, an American man citing ! )
    9) Hurckaz
    10) Djokovic
    11) Zverev (and he's out still rehabbing)
    12) Norrie
    13) PCB
    14) Sinner
    15) Berrettini ( How he's fallen)

My understanding was that Novak had already qualified for the WTF by winning Astana?

I heard that also but don't understand from looking at the points Astana was, I believe, an ATP 500 {quite possibly the smallest 500 but whatever) and a "Green Checkmark" just appeared next to his name on the ATP Web site -- yet there are five (5) players with more points than Djokovic, two of which won titles this weekend.

For a second I wondered if Fritz wasn't entered in anything, but there are so many events left including Paris/Bercy which is a Masters 1000. So, I can't explain that.

Would be a strange event without him, but these are strange times.

Ah, here you go. Never heard of (or needed) this before

ATP: Tenth-placed Novak Djokovic has claimed his spot in Turin under the Grand Slam champion provision, which awards entry to a current-year major winner who finishes between eighth and 20th in the Live Race.

I certainly never heard of that before either, but I am personally glad he will be in the field.

That was news to me too. Seems fair enough I suppose if you have won a slam and have retained a credible top 20 ranking. Had he been allowed to play in the events he was barred from due to Covid restrictions he might well still be the world number 1...highly likely in fact. I had him down for 400 weeks.
