  • ATP Win-Loss Since Pandemic

Only 3 players among the top 10 have a winning record vs the rest of the Top 10 since the Pandemic (Orange box in upper right).
i.e. the "other" 7 top 10 players all have losing records vs their peers.

Same 3 players have 60 wins in "Big Events", which is nearly double the next best recored.
Novak has best overall Win-Loss %
Records that might surprise some: Casper Ruud, Seb Korda, Cam Norrie, Aslan Karatsev.

Karatsev, ranked at 18, has a 5-4 record vs Top 10 -- including a semifinal spanking of Djokovic at his home town tournament in Belgrade.

Good to see Meddy and Zverev finally shown consistency in results. Be interesting to see if they can keep it up and rise above the pack.

I agree. They have definitely separated a bit. And Sinner is coming quick.

The all time W/L record: https://www.chaseyoursport.com/Tenni...ercentage/3224

The ATP have it down differently to other sources...not sure why that is.

Hard to argue why the player with the highest W/L record wouldn't be consider the best of their generation. Or that the player with all time highest W/L ratio is not the GOAT. After all, it's all about winning.

Yes, quite a difference between this and the ATP W-L?

But, please don't tempt me into the GOAT debates <g>.

"The Greatest" is vague and ambiguous. Since it can be defined any way one wants, anyone can pick most anybody and then build an argument.

My recollection (imperfect as it is) is that no one ever mentioned total 'Slam titles when the general consensus was something like: "It's between Laver, Pancho, Borg ...". Then a subset of Fed Fanz insisted on counting total, major titles. That's coming back to bite them since that might go to Novak.

IMHO total titles sounds more like a "Lifetime Achievement Award" than "Greatest Ever".

To me, greatest is the highest, sustained level of play. A prime candidate would be Peak Fed, from 2004 to 2007/8. Twelve 'slams in 5 years is unequalled, as is 5 consecutive US Opens, each final won against a one-time world number one, and 5 consecutive Wimbledon singles titles (starting in 2003). During that span Fed has three (3) of his four seasons where he won over 90% of his matches, and two of over 95%. As Andy Roddick put it (roughly), "Federer was both the best offensive player and the best defensive player at the same time."

I don't know when that has ever happened before or since.

But -- so much is subjective.

Sure, but it wasn't much of a field back then to what it became six years later, which backs up what you said below"

                I'll take McEnroe in 1983.

Heck of a player. I believe that's the year I saw him vs Lendl at the old SF Open in the Cow Palace. Lost in tough 3 sets.

Beat Gilbert, Roscoe Tanner, Curren in that event.

Next year, tho, was when J Mac went 82-3 for ATP record winning percentage of 96.5% (had to look that up)

Fed trivia: All Roger had to do to break McEnroe's record in 2005, or so the story goes, was to stay withdrawn with an injury from the year end Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. But after Rafa withdrew, and someone else I can't recall, organizers prevailed on Fed to play. Reportedly flew to Shanghai with his foot in a boot from an ankle tendon problem. Went undefeated until the finals when he faced David Nalbandian, who he beat in the round robin. Went up 2 sets to love, then mobility left him. Still took it to a fifth set tiebreak that Nalby won. {Finals were best of 5 back then).

Fed ended 2005 with record of 81-4

On the year, he split with Rafa and with Marat Satin and lost on clay to Richard Gasquet.

1984 was the year I meant. What I remember most was his dismantling of Connors in the 1984 Wimbledon final. Dan Maskell described as the most perfect tennis he had ever seen. He was right. It was a masterclass of controlled tennis.

I still think Roger's early years at the top were easy pickings. He is great, though, and his form over 15 years has been sensational. The Roger/Rafa Wimbledon final trilogy was the most exciting in history. Rafa got better at each attempt and finally clinched the title in 2008. I was there to witness it with my son. The crowd absolutely loved Roger. The only other player comparable in popularity was Borg. The Wimbledon crowd are never disrespectful or impolite but have a way of singling out their favourites. Very different type of crowd to the US Open.

                    Those were the days....
