Yes Julio...Novak Djokovic had his ass handed to him and it is about damned time too. Sixty Grand Slam titles between the three of them...Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. It is high time that someone younger coming up the pipe had the balls to take the game to one of them and take them down...hard. This is the strongest indicator of the weakness and lack of the depth in the sport of tennis. Three players have dominated for over ten years without so much as a consistent threat from the also rans.
Easier said than done. As uncle Toni, once said "You cannot beat the best of all time. But if you make him doubt..."
It's the doubt part that I wonder about. Will the young guns start to doubt less and the old guard more.
We saw what doubt did to Federer at Wimbledon against Nadal in 2008. Nadal played a great match but it was the final at RG that had carried over. On grass with Federer in good form, the same match played 10 times, Federer wins 6 or 7. The doubt just began to swing in Nadal's favor. Then Federer finally switched to a larger racket. Ljubicic came in and cleaned up his backhand. And the doubt was gone.
Doubt is the thing that has kept the young generation out of the top echelons. Everyday they all doubt a little bit less until one day they won't doubt at all.
The US Open final started the process. The question is how long it will take. You can replace anti-doubt with balls if you would like.
