  • Chain Pulling on the Serve

In watching the players that I coach and coach against, I have noticed that many serve with what used to be called the "chain-pulling" technique. There seems to be a late snap and the butt end of the racquet seems to lead through the follow through causing the ball to be pushed long. Do you see this technique as a common service flaw? Also, does the concept of extension apply to the serve and how soon should the butt end be pointing down?

I'm having a hard time visualizing this. Unless the wrist comes to a neutral position, the serve is going to be a lob and you don't see that too often...

If you have a piece of video of an example that would be the best way to see what you are talking about.

So far as "extension" on the serve--that usually refers to the arm extending or being straight at the elbow at contact. Different than on the forehand concept. The serve has a followthrough for sure, but it's more consequential I feel than on the forehand.
