  • 2019 Open 13 Provence...ATP 250...Marseille, France

In a country that used to be France we have an ATP 250 that borders on being a tennis tournament. It still is tough for me to stay interested in a tournament that doesn't have Roger Federer in the draw. But in this ATP 250 event Stefanos Tsitsipas finds himself ranked numero uno...the #1 seed. So it is interesting in the sense as we look through the lens of match play psychology and tactics to see how this young man responds to the new sense of expectations that have arisen for him.

My recommendation is to not do things differently than he did when he was ascending in a somewhat "meteoric" fashion. This might include turning down some of the hyperventilating events that go along with the territory of being the number one seed. If you aren't used to it don't overextend yourself trying to satisfy the insatiable appetite of the numbskull press. Take things one step at a time and try like hell to stay in the moment. Take the matches one at a time and don't get too deep into the draw sheet until you actually get there.

There are a lot of seasoned tournament players in this draw and it is a little premature to see Tsitsipas seeded number one at such an event when in reality any player in the draw could conceivably knock him into next weeks draw. For instance Gael "The Amazing Mr. Monfils" Monfils who won last week and defeated young Stefanos the week before is lurking in Stefanos' quarterfinal. But Stefano would do well to just focus on the first match and not get ahead of himself. Stay in the moment. Stop the world. What a huge lesson that would be for the young man from Greece.

I don't even project Tsitsipas past the first match. Either player there is capable of sending him packing. He has to into every match hungry. As if his opponent is trying to steal his girlfriend. Because in reality they are. It is that visceral.

Great tournament win for Stefanos Tsitsipas. He beat everyone he should in the manner that he should. A nice step in the right direction. The serve needs attention. There is friction in the machine.
