FH Grips

I just signed up on your site earlier this week, and I absolutely love
it. You have some great content!


The way you explain grips is the best I've ever come across. A 3/3
grip explains it so much better than "eastern". My backhand grip is a
2/1, and I always thought this wasn't correct until I saw this
explained on your site. I wish this would catch on more, and then
there could be far less confusion over grips.


In this article on forehand grips, you call the 3/3 a Modern Eastern.
Why distinguish it as "Modern", as opposed to an implied classic
eastern? Was there a classic eastern? Is this a different eastern
grip than the one Tilden used?

I think that a player like Budge had basically a "3 / 2" . This would be an old style eastern grip. It's what I was taught at age 10, but found impossible to hold...

It's a probably a function of all the grass court play in the old days--a little better to take the ball on the rise??

Interestingly the pictures in Match Play and the Spin of the Ball show Tilden's eastern version to more like what I call a modern eastern.
