  • 2017 Swiss Indoors Basel...ATP 500...Basel, Switzerland

Another tennis tournament. You know that their days are limited now. The game of tennis as we knew it is winding down. Roger Federer drives closer and closer to the limits of his professional playing career. But as it stands now...he is at a zenith. His form over the past twelve months has been arguably the best in the business. Rafael Nadal stands at number one in the ranking but he has taken five straight shellackings from the Swiss Maestro. Be still my pounding heart. When I think of this fun fact it makes it just a tad easier to accept that real tennis as we know it is coming to a finale. Federer's dominance of Nadal at the end of his career is going to be the icing on the cake of his long and illustrious career. The only stain on his career has been Nadal's dominance of him on clay courts. The bigger racquet has changed everything and I for one will remember exactly what transpired. He should have changed a long, long time ago. But it is only more of a reason to admire his stubbornness. His tenacity. His devotion and his love for the real game of tennis...the classic game.

First round for Roger is Francis Tiafoe. A powerful young American who proved to be a bit of a pest in the first round at the U. S. Open as Roger gingerly moved around the court in his comeback from a back injury that caused him to miss valuable preparation time for the Open. But you can bet your bottom dollar that he has been diligently preparing. Preparation...preparation...preparation...has become the mantra of Federer in his winding down his career as he tries to summon the dragon time and time again to the finish line. Roger knows of all people...it isn't how it goes in the beginning of a match (career) it is how it goes at the end. Tennis is much like life as we metaphor ourselves up the river. The hot hand at the beginning is not always the winner at the finish line. Many have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat...and vice versa.

The unique scoring system allows for some very interesting endings to some very interesting stories. But always keep in mind the value of the seventh game in the set. Keep in mind that the age of forty is a turning point in a man's life. Fyodor Dostoyevsky wrote that:

“"The second half of a man's life is made up of nothing but the habits he has acquired during the first half.”"

Interesting enough this quote comes from his epic novel about Russia in 1871 called "The Devils" or "The Possessed". Depending upon the translation of course.

I watched Juan Martin Del Potro yesterday play Fernando Verdasco with my wife. She made sandwiches of Chanterelle mushrooms that I had picked out of the forest earlier in the month. Fried bacon bits and two flavors of cheese on some bread ideal for the task. klacr...are you with me. But anyways...Del Potro and Fernando were both pouring it on and it was quite a display of power tennis. Not much in the way of subtlety as you might imagine. Del Potro was crushing his backhand with two hands as he appears to be nearing a hundred percent recovery from the wrist ailments that have plagued him. He plays Grigor Dimitrov..."The Bulgarian Playboy" in the finals of the Stockholm Open today. They will be playing with the "Robin Söderling" ball and this is the only ATP tournament in the world that uses it. Coincidentally Robin Söderling is the tournament director here in Stockholm. It's the "Stockholm Syndrome" you see. Robin has them hostage.

Basel this week as the tour players descend upon St. Jakobshalle to compete. Federer's home tournament, therefore expect it to line up for Fed as he collects another title.
don_budge yes I am with you. You had me at bacon bits!!!

First Roger Federer ATP Final...Marseille, France 2000

Roger Federer vs. Marc Rosset (All Swiss Final)

A preview of things to come. Notice the temper. Another interesting note in this match is the execution of the slice backhands. It was more of a classic slice where the follow through "carried" the ball on the racquet more instead of the "chopping" motion used nowadays. It could be due to the strings.

Amazing how far down the page this thread was pushed...a new kid on the block. JensenBreck. Take it easy JensenBreck...why not start a thread of your own. You are taking up a lot of space and getting very little response.

Roger Federer quickly eliminated Benoit Paire 6-1, 6-3. The same score as Francis Tiafoe. Funny how Rafael Nadal withdrew from this tournament. The coward. The chicken. He knew he was going to get his ass handed to him again by Roger. He took the easy way out. For all those that tout him as being such a warrior. He was a chicken that last match in China as well. Complaining the whole time about the conditions. Come on...its a tennis court.

Three out of the top four are currently out of action. Make that four out of the top five. Djokovic, Murray, Nadal and Wawrinka. There is your modern game of tennis. Roger is almost done and in a way I hope that he makes it sooner rather than later. When he is done...I am done. But the guy is truly amazing. He was so razor sharp against both Tiafoe and Paire. Perhaps a Del Potro versus Federer final?

not getting response, I am thinking that is not unprecedented here. For some reason, I am not certain starting own thread is the way to go. Roger, inimitable.

No, you are not getting enough response. That is because you are not provocative enough. And Jason, go ahead and take up all the space you want. It's virtually unlimited here. And understand too that lack of response could also mean that you scored with a killer. It's only Trump and his mindless minions who count every word of every response, every person in the mall and then add a billion.

Grand Slam tournaments get the biggest response. ATP 1000 events seem to do okay also. Posting clips often sees a good response. John's monthly articles also stir interest. It's the quiet periods where we all struggle and end up posting about Trump.

The Trump thread needs to drop dead and be replaced instead with World Affairs. I am loathed to start a World Affairs thread while the Trump thread continues. There is only room for one thread like that.

How is Basel going? I have been on holiday and not seen a ball struck yet?

I watched the entire Fed vs Mannarino match yesterday. It was a great match. Mannarino really made him work hard. Fed lost the 1st set, won the 2nd easily and had to dig in to win/take the third. He worked hard and was of course the better player, but I have always liked Mannario's game. A very good mover, good off both sides, good serve and hands. That is what number 28 in the world looks like( and that is about as good as his ranking has ever been), It shows to me how tough it is out there. The announcers to me missed the boat and spent way too much time talking about how Fed was off and not how well Mannarino was playing and competing.

Thanks for this. Funny how you always warm to the same players as me.

Mannarino is a tricky customer and a really interesting player. I really enjoy watching him play because he can upset just about any player. He is one the smartest players on the tour when it comes to playing matches and making life difficult for opponents. I'm a huge fan.

No...that new kid just delivered another bunch of threads. He has completely dominated the front page of the forum now with threads that are not getting any response. He doesn't seem to be present. He may only be an "Artificial Intelligence" entity. Lacking in normal human responses.

Nonsense. He knows some science, and you, sir, are a Luddite.

No, it's not okay to be an anachronism. We must try to live in the present. And also, not try to quell some "new kid," as you say, just because he might challenge your dominance of the airwaves.

don_budge appears to have canceled the post where he says, "OK, I'm a Luddite." At least he knows enough science to occasionally allude to Darwin and cancel some post so as disrupt context and be a mind-fuck.
