The grass was so different back then. Players played in drizzle or even rain and the balls collected moisture and bounced really low. I once saw the Lloyd brothers play Adriano Pannatta and Paolo Bertolucci in a Davis Cup match at Wimbledon. David Lloyd just dinked volleys over the net and the Italian players could do nothing with them.

Interesting discussion between Dennis Ralston, Billy Talbert, Art Larson and Gardner Mulloy at 17.53 in the video. They start talking about the relative merits of grass court play versus clay court play and begin to talk about emerging tennis personalities with more flamboyant expressions. Billy Talbert suggests taking some of the pressure out of the ball to encourage more backcourt play. Very interesting...but Art Larson almost leaps out of his chair to shove something down Talbert's throat and argues that things should remain exactly the way they are. He is an anti interventionist.

Rod Laver completes the Grand Slam in 1969 with a win over his friend and fellow Aussie Tony Roche. The Open Era is born and the winds of change are already in the air.
