Michael Zerev proved today that serve and volley and aggressive net play is not dead! Constant attacking caused Murray to break down! Great! Michael kept his cool even during the final stages of the match. He went 118 times to the net. From the baseline he also gave Murray no rhythm: floaters, slice, etc.

Totally agree! This guy comes to net behind almost every single serve. He beat Wawrinka and nearly beat Djokovic end of last season, and now he beats Murray in a slam. As I've always said, this style is so rare nowadays, not because it's ineffective in the modern game, but because coaches neither teach it enough nor encourage those who show an aptitude for it. It was a fantastic match to watch, I look forward to Watch him take on Roger in a couple of hours time.

Guess it is also about getting quick results. I assume they start teaching kids earlier nowadays and you need a certain size for serve and volley. So the little kids become baseliners and nobody wants to change that style down the road, because you will lose for a while. We live in impatient times. Someone told me that Stan Smith started playing in his late teens... Just the right size to learn serve and volley.

Glad he made a fight of it in the end, he played great in the 2nd set, could have taken it. Federer's ability to get the ball down low on return off both wings was key, and something Murray didn't have the ability to do with his flatter hit and double hander. Zverev's compact early returns were once again impressive, did break Fed to love in the 2nd set. This guy is going to take down many more players this year with his style of play.
