  • Stefan Edberg Serve...

I searched the net for a video of Stefan's Kick serve and found this:

    Edberg Kick Serve

By stopping the video at impact point, you can see how far behind his head the ball is. Also he follows through very pronouncedly to the right with a strong downward wrist break after impact.

Vic Braden maintained that hitting so far behind was the cause of rotor cuff injuries. Is this correct?

That clip is pretty much mush. I can't tell where the contact is and camera angle affects things too. I'd look at the Sampras serves first and seconds for a better model. That is Vic's contention about the rotator cuff. Personally I don't have the expertise to have an opinion on it though. I will say that most all good servers that I have filmed who kick the ball still make contact at the edge of the front of the body.
