  • Design of the Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90

I've heard that the Wilson Pro Staff Tour 90 was designed for (and even by) Pete Sampras. Apparently, the textured paint around the hoop was Pete's idea...is this really true?

Does anyone know what the advantages of the PS Tour 90 were supposed to be over the PS 6.0 85??

Slightly larger face to help Pete play on clay?? How about weight and balance, as the Tour 90 has a higher swing index? Hypercarbon to add stiffness to the frame??

It would be interesting to know if the Tour 90 was really designed by Pete to be his racquet, and if so, what did he have in mind???

How is this an equipment forum?

Really, this would be better served in the TW Talk Tennis Message Boards.

There's so much there about equipment, especially that of the pros.

This is an instructional website. Let's keep it that way.

Quantity, yes, but not necessarily quality. There's far, far too much on those boards. Members here should be substantially more knowledgeable. Thanks for your comments.

Pro Staff Tour 90 'Designed' by Sampras

Equipment is an important part of the game. So here goes...

I do not know about the paint, but the Pro Staff Tour 90 (the grey, red and yellow one) was 'designed' with Pete's input to his specifications -- to be Pete's racquet after he won his last U.S. Open. (I got my first one when it first came out at the Nasdaq 2003).

The 90 feels like the 85 with some lead tape on it and with a bigger head. It plays heavier and I find it more powerful than the 85.

The Wilson 'Rok' was supposed to be Federer's racquet -- designed with his input. When Federer got a demo of Pete's new racquet he fell in love with it and switched to it from the old classic 85 he used.

The newer version (red and white) that Federer now uses, feels substantially lighter then the previous model. I plan on switching to it in the next few months.

        Cheers,
        Mark

          Mark,

Just checked out your website. Great pictures!

Sure, equipment is an important part of tennis. You need a racquet to hit the ball. But, this forum really isn't geared towards that at all. Wouldn't you agree that the Talk Tennis Message Board at TW is better suited for that?

Anyways, you do some great work. Keep it up.

          Sincerely,
          Lukman

            Mark,

Thanks for your comments. I'm fascinated by the PS Original and anything related to it. It's a whole story (saga...) unto itself...

I'll check out your website. BTW, have you met Mark Knowles?? He's from the Bahamas. I saw him play a singles match years and years ago in Toronto. He was (is) a tough competitor, and he won that day!

            Thanks again.

Wow! How did you get the shots from what appears to be almost directly above? Is the stadium really that steep!!??
