Has anyone bought or is anyone looking to buy a tennis sensor?
    How have your experiences been?

I don't have anything (yet), but shot stats looks especially cool for its instant feedback, but it does have a little extra weight and the launch keeps getting pushed back. I feel like Zepp and Sony would get annoying being at the bottom of the handle since my hand hangs off a little. Qlipp looks pretty cool as it has a nice feature set including live video analysis. Plus, it has stuck to its schedule nicely and moved through development relatively quickly. I think that is a sign that investors are impressed by it unlike with the shot stats.

Does anyone use a radar gun app that is accurate?

    John,
do you think tennis sensors are a good alternative to radar guns as you outlined in the following article? http://www.tennisplayer.net/members/...ar_technology/

    Thanks,
    Eaglesburg

I have not experimented with the sensors. Not sure what exactly they could tell me that would be valuable compared to studying the shapes of the swings.
The radar gun I feel is valuable in measuring change when you are working on strokes, but think it's not something you would want to be constantly bringing out.

Anyone else (Phil or anyone??) who has tried the sensors and found them positive/

They could provide racket head speed.

        Eaglesburg,

I'm not too big on sensors and have never used one before this summer and am more with John on this. But, This summer I worked with gzhpcu in Switzerland.
He has the Zepp sensor and stuck it on my racquet. I took a few swings and got the info on a serve.
But the questions remain...what does it all mean and how do you use it for improvement? I have attached the screen shot of a serve that was measured.

You tell me. What can you do with this info?

I think it's more curiosity of how we compare with others rather than making a significant impact and truly changing the technical checkpoints on a stroke to make it better.

I am thinking that by getting numbers on your swing like racket head speed you can know if technical changes are really effective. It is similar to the way John uses a radar gun in the article I mentioned in the original post. You can get immediate feedback on your strokes. With live video analysis feature it is even better so you can visually associate and check technical changes with increases in racket head speed.

yes. But you don't actually get to see your strokes and the technical checkpoints that apply. Perhaps the numbers are good, but did you reach those numbers by the correct technique and can it be sustained or are you missing a small piece that could create better effciency within the stroke. Also, Where did the shot go? Yes, numbers look great on the swing, but did it land in the box?Hitting a big shot is great, but did it land at it's desired location? What strain does it have on body and how does the swing actually hold up in a match when someone is returning a ball with interest. These tools are great to see the impact of technical changes and ball speed, but how do you create a swing that is replicable and a weapon?

So tell me? Looking at my serve info. What do those numbers mean and what technical adjustments should I make. What can I improve on and how can I get my serve better by reviewing my info?

The holy grail of tennis sensors is the one that can give you a complete 3D view of the specific shot in question, measures your ball speed in comparison to your peers and the top players, gives you a meaning and reasoning behind the mph, angles, spins, vectors and everything in between and most importantly, allows you to improve instantaneously each time you use it. . Oh, and did I mention, does not change weight or feel of body and racquet head you you play.

            I'm still looking.

I am just thinking to use it to check if a technical change is beneficial or not in an objective, quantifiable way. For example you could make a change to your technique hit some more serves and compare that data to the previous data. Of course I would not recommend this as a main method of training, just a small side supplement to check if technical changes are effective.

                Eagle,

Sounds like you have made up your mind. Just go for it.

That's the easy part ...the hard part is figuring out which one.

                    Eaglesburg,

It won't matter which one. If you are curious about your game and seeking improvement then these sensors will certainly not hurt. Just go for it and report back to us on it. Would be interested in results. Good luck.

I can sum up my experience using the Gartner Group Technology Hype curve:

I am currently in the trough of disillusionment. First thought it was the greatest invention since sliced bread, then slowly started thinking over and interpreting the stats and landing back to the harsh reality.

The trajectory on the serve looks cool, but video is better.

As Kyle mentioned, you do not know what shot went in and which shot went out, etc.

I like this graph…but where is the "utter and complete nonsense" phase?

The key to all of this is coming soon. So don't discount it yet.

Coming soon! A device that will automatically tag video so that after the match or practice session you will be able to look at each stroke and see the data for that stroke.
