  • Shoulder position on serve

What I do not think I have ever read (correct me if I am wrong), is that the correction to avoid facing the net on the serve too soon, is to hit up and the ball and not out. If I think of hitting forward, the shoulders turn sooner than if I think of hitting up.

So the advice to hit up towards the ball gets you also in the right position, delays the shoulder turn and results in the cartwheel motion.

That is also why it is important to start looking up where you want to toss the ball on the serve, and then keep the hit still through impact. See the Tony Trabert video for a good demonstration of all these points.
