What I do not think I have ever read (correct me if I am wrong), is that the correction to avoid facing the net on the serve too soon, is to hit up and the ball and not out. If I think of hitting forward, the shoulders turn sooner than if I think of hitting up.
So the advice to hit up towards the ball gets you also in the right position, delays the shoulder turn and results in the cartwheel motion.
