  • 2014 Citi Open...Washington, DC USA

Washington D. C. USA. Only in America. The lies and the deception. What can you say about politicians? Bought and paid for. Sign of the times. Somewhere between Hollywood and Washington lies America. The land of the free. The land of the freebie. Now...it's the more you got the more you get. The Nobel Peace Prize winner in the White House...ginning up for WWIII with Russia...while dismally failing to play any mitigating role in the Israel-Palestine farce. These are the days...are they not?

But anyways...somewhere's outside the parkway lies the Citi Open. When I was there in 1974 it was called the Washington Star tournament. It used to be played on Har-Tru. Good old green American clay. I miss that stuff. It's only red over here in Europe.

But check out a bit of history of this event...not that anybody might be interested. Look here at the draw sheet for the 1973 edition.

Past results, draws and seeds from the tournament archive in men's professional tennis on the ATP Tour.

Look at the final pairing...none other than Arthur "The Stoic" Ashe versus Tom "The Flying Dutchman" Okker. The same as in the 1968 U. S. Open singles final. Same results too...only this time on CLAY. See what I mean about adaptability. There were plenty of clay court specialists present and accounted for if you were familiar with this era. The draw sheet serves as proof.

I remember Don Budge really liked the "New Kid in Town" Guillermo Vilas. He loved the way he rolled his backhand with topspin. I remember too...going up to Ion Tiriac and engaging him in conversation. I was so proud of myself...everyone was so intimidated by him. He was rather kind to me...I took him by surprise. I asked him if it was true that he once ate a glass ashtray. What a question! Hey...I was only nineteen.

Fast forward to the next year...1974. Just another fantastic draw sheet.

Past results, draws and seeds from the tournament archive in men's professional tennis on the ATP Tour.

Harold Solomon over Guillermo Vilas in three grueling sets. Solomon "owned" Vilas 5-2 head to head on clay. True testimony to his gutsiness on the dirt. I guess Mr. Budge knew what he was talking about regarding Vilas...Vilas went on to post a 929-286 career won lost record.

The score of this match, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, may not indicate it but anybody familiar with the style of play between these two will testify that it was probably a long and arduous affair. Harold was the 11th seed...true testimony to the depth of the tennis in those days.

Billy Martin who had been a God in the juniors had perhaps his best run in a tourney as an adult...unseeded he got to the semis having defeated Raul Ramirez, Fred McNair, Tom Gorman and Stan Smith in succession before running into Harold "The Wall" Solomon. Billy ran out of gas after taking the first set from Harold...he lost the last two 6-1, 6-0.

Citi Open...this years edition. Young Americans.

Tomas Berdych took it on the chin yesterday by one V. Pospisil. Sorry about that Chief. I happened to stumble across that match on the link...

On the very first point that I tuned in on...Tomas was making a rare foray into the net. He transitioned from behind the baseline on a short ball. He looked extremely awkward weakening his grip to play an attempted underspin forehand then hit his volley into the tape. The approach was probably a bit substandard than it should have been.

Big surprise...there are a couple of Young Americans left. Lo and behold it is Donald Young taking out a couple of seeds. Ditto for Steve Johnson. Quarterfinal action coming up with Milos Raonic maybe the favorite left standing.

I was really, really, really hoping no one started a Washington DC Citi Open thread this week as it means I have to come out of my shell and defend Berdych. Last nights performance was frustrating. Banging my head against the wall. Berdych has been seeded #1 nine times in ATP tournaments in his career. He has just one title from those events.

His game will be primed for the US Open. At least I hope it is since I'm going to be there to see it!

Thanks for starting this thread don_budge. Salt in the wound.

I remember Billy Martin. I saw him in the 1970s at Wembley, London. What happened to him?

I remember another American call Ben Testerman who played at Wimbledon one year in the mixed with Billy Jean King. What happened to him? He just disappeared.

Billy Martin is the men's tennis coach at UCLA. Probably been there at least 20 years.

Ben Testerman played in the late 80's. He played in Huggy Bears in 1987. Retired in 88. Reached Aussie semis at a 22 y.o. in '84. I don't know what happened to Ben. Probably settled back in Tennessee.

Billy Martin is the head coach of a National Powerhouse UCLA. Been there for years. Competes for national titles every single year. Team is loaded with studs top to bottom. Master recruiter.

Ben Testerman should have made finals of 84' Aussie. Up two sets to love on Kevin Curren only to lose it.

Testerman is an assistant coach for the Tennessee Men's Tennis Team.

Ben Testerman played Wimbledon in 1979, the mixed with Billie Jean King. I knew I had seen him earlier than the 80s. Players come and go, don't they? Some make it, others fall by the way.

                The Old Washington Star Tournament...1984

I think it is just great that you hang with your favorite player. Loyalty is a virtue, you know. There is so little virtue in the world it seems today. No salt in the wound...there is no harm in being loyal even when things don't go well. It's character building.

But it's funny...the moment I came to the Berdych match, on the very first point he was approaching the net. He really fumbled with the grip and his position on the ball...he really isn't used to playing the ball in the middle of the court. He managed to keep the ball in play on his approach even though it wasn't what you or I would have called an effective approach but it was the volley that was so telling. It wasn't a difficult ball to handle but he sort of muffed it too. In the net.

I see things a bit differently...I know that. But what I see in Tomas Berdych is something rather typical these days. He is such a big guy...I ask myself why does he need two hands on the racquet. When I look at him and I "see" the amount of talent that he has I ask myself why he is so limited in his tactical choices. What a shame...I think. Why do I see him at the net? With a one handed backhand?

On a positive note for American tennis...Donald Young is still alive. But he is up against a big serving Milos Raonic. Keep your fingers crossed.

I had a friend of mine that did pretty good at this tournament...once upon a time. It was 1984...oh my god...there is that year again. What's up with that?

                  Gotta appreciate Aaron!
Definately loyal to Berdych. Loyal enough to buy his H7M clothing as well. That navy blue and white flower shirt, yeah, that's all me. He'll be sporting a orange and brown motif for US Open, bought that as well.

We have different game styles and I have a one hander, he has a two hander. But I know talent when i see it. He's too good to be just #5 in the world. He has the game. He just needs the belief.

Berdych's coach Tomas Krupa has done a great job with him, but I think Tberd needs another voice, as much as I like to say "Myself", I think a former player like Lendl would do the trick. Get into Berdych's head like he did with Andy Murray. If Murray won two grand slams, How many grand slams could Tomas have won by now with his talent and aggressive firepower?

Win or lose, Lendl's voice or not, I'm firmly planted in the front seat of his bandwagon. Not going anywhere. When he wins a grand slam, it will make all the frustrations worthwhile.

Donald Young surprised everyone yesterday when he beat Kevin Anderson. Anderson, a Delray Beach resident, was up a set and looking like a routine victory. But DY kept fighting, kept grinding. Good for him.

Raonic crusied against Steve Johnson. The big bomb of a serve being chipped and blocked back by Johnson, begging to be taken out of the air as a...

well let's not get me started on that.

Gasquet crushed a less than 100% Nishikori. This time it was his Ankle. Kinda getting sick of the injuries this Nishikori guy has. Is his body made out of Balsa wood? Tired of hearing everyone talk about him as the future of the game and a possible grand slam contender. You do have to win 7 matches best of 5 remember. Can Nishikori do that or will he spontaneously combust because of the physical grind? Hope

I hope I'm not sounding negative. I try not to be, but that Gasquet/Nishikori match was such a disappointment. I have the utmost respect for all the players who go through the hard work and sacrifice and reach that level, I've met and work with some of them. But lets make sure a player can go through the physical paces before we anoint him the next superstar. When I worked at the Harry Hopman Tennis Academy in Tampa, I put people through their paces. I had to. That was part of the process. Makes me wonder how Harry Hopman would have handled Nishikori. I'd hate and love to be on that court at the same time. But that's an entirely different thread

What is wrong with Tberd? Movement forward/transition/volleys/touch/emotional outbursts/too heavy/stamina/belief/finicky under top player pressure/no serve volley reliable/too many missed returns/aggression index not up high enough or consistent enough/bh slice does not skid buy lays up too much. I was saying a year ago that Raonic would be the first newbie to win wimbledon, then he lay down against Fed in the semis. Strings too low at 42/44 with M2pro lux. He's got to string higher if only at 54lbs. Sampras started out at 61/59 and moved up to 73/71 but that was all season gut. Ray gun should learn a thing or two other than how to serve from Sampras. (Was his model.)

Great find by tennisplayer.net contributor Jason Frausto from Friday's Gasquet-Nishikori Match.

May need to check with Mr. Yandell but this Gasquet backhand may be some record. Check out those RPM's. 5,849 RPM's on a one-handed backhand.

                      Thoughts. Pretty impressive no?

The most rpm recorded for a bh was for a Fed slice: 5300 rpm. Until now.

Yup. Pretty crazy. It wasnt a lob nor was it defensive. Neutral rally ball from 6-8 ft behind baseline. We always knew that one hander was magical.
