I had two problems which were hampering me:

    1) pain in my left hip

    2) high blood pressure medicine leaving me without energy

So, almost two years ago, I had a hip operation, so that problem went away. My hip is much more flexible than before

The second problem was more difficult to address. Doctors nowadays solve health problems by prescribing pills. These medications made me feel tired. So, I started investigating on the internet and found the following:

    1) isometric hand grip excercises lower systolic blood pressure. I tried it and it works for me!
    See: http://www.livestrong.com/article/23...lood-pressure/

    2) certain foods lower systolic blood pressure:

    2a) beet juice: http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-hi...blood-pressure
2b) dates lower blood pressure: http://naturalsociety.com/health-ben...at-date-fruit/
    2c) green tea: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/ar...a-healthy.html
    2d) various other tips: http://www.wikihow.com/Lower-Blood-Pressure-Quickly

With all of the above, I have managed to reduce my medication by about one third and my energy is back. I, of course, monitor my blood pressure regularly, and am, in a controlled fashion, gradually decreasing the medication even more. Just as long as it remains around 125/70-80.

The result of all of this? Am back playing good tennis again (despite my 68 years). Just played yesterday morning with a 35 year old friend of mine, who is ranked R4 in Switzerland (that corresponds to a US 3.5). He is very fit, extremely fast, and plays an aggressive, heavy topspin game. We played for an hour and got to 4-4. Long exchanges, I countered his superior speed with faster, flatter strokes and forays to the net (where he never ventures...). Am very happy to see that I can still manage to play some good tennis again!

Interesting this. I coach a man aged 70. He has high blood pressure and takes a beta blocker. He is fine on the beta blocker unless he runs around too much, then he starts to feel weak, tired. This sounds like your problem? Are you on beta blockers?

He is also on statins which affect his muscles a bit.

I am seeing him this Friday and will have a chat with him about the diet stuff and the hand grip exercises.

Perhaps you can let me know about the beta blocker...if that's what you were on. It's a nuisance for the man I coach. It restricts his lesson to 30 minutes. In the evenings he becomes very tired also.

Glad to see you have gone some way to resolving your problems, and that you are back to playing good tennis.

I'm almost 60, and won three 4.5 matches in one day in a norcal ntrp tournament, beating the #1: 2 and 1, #4:, 2 and 3 (both had won norcal 4.5 tournaments) and another 4.5 guy 3 and 1. It was a hot day in the valley. Played until 7:30pm. Started cramping so I had to od on salt. Next day final, took a 4-3 lead and then fell apart. Body reached its limit. Weigh too much at 230lbs!

Yes I am on beta blockers: Aetonolol mepha, and Sortis (statin). I have cut the original dose (Atenolol 50 mg, twice a day - Sortis 20 mg in the evening - - down to Atenolol 25 mg, twice a day, Sortis 10 mg in the evening).
I did it as I mentioned, but always carefully measured my blood pressure at home. We are all different, if he tries, he should do so progressively controlling his results as he goes along...)

I was playing at the 5.0 level for about 20 years, so I am still far away from what I used to play, but at least am still having fun...

For what it’s worth...I delayed total hip replacement for 15 years after open hip impingement repair. Can move now, but at age 70, lost too much ground for singles with surgery delay. 99% blockage( no symptoms) of widowmaker heart artery resulting in one stent. Beta blockers drop target heart rate at least 20 bpm for one’s age. Bystolic( not generic) and Livalo for cholesterol( not generic) seemed to have less side effects.
