    Tilikainen probably deserves coach of the year for getting Jerzy from outside the top 200 to the top 15 in under 2 years. It's clear Janowicz's game requires a lot of maturity that simply isn't there. But we have to remember how quick this trip has been.

    Jerzy's record is 27-20 for the year and 47-36 for his career. That's only 13 more career losses (tournament entries) than Jack Sock. Ryan Harrison is 53-74. Imagine, more than twice as many tournaments although he is 18 months younger.

    We can't really answer the critical question we are all asking: Is the next move for Jerzy above Tilikainen's pay grade and capability? It is certainly above his experience. Jerzy needs someone who can convince him to "get down and dirty" a little bit the way Stotty is suggesting - put a little more spin on the ball in those balls he is exchanging with his opponent until the opportunity presents itself to be more aggressive. We can probably agree on that. Personally, and I don't know how much agreement I'll get on this, I want to see someone who convinces him to be more aggressive with his use of serve-and-volley and approach-and-volley tactics.

    I was really encouraged to see how well he seemed to be moving. It didn't seem there were any lingering effects from his back and arm problems this summer. But that may just be appearances. It may, in fact, be that his mobility is compromised and he has chosen to go for shorter points and avoid being drawn into track meets along the baseline that put more stress on his back. I think his service motion is relatively low stress for his back; running into corners and recovering constantly to exchange with someone like Nadal (which he did a couple of times rather unsuccessfully today) may be much tougher on his back.

    The match today certainly backs up the claim I have made here for a number of months that he is the one guy who can really take it to the guys at the top. Obviously he can get a lot better, but the potential is clearly there as it is not with any of the other giants. He is not just fast for a big guy; he is actually quick. He can return big serves. Whether or not he is going to need a brain transplant to reach his potential is the scary question. I know you tend to get to the experimental therapies a little quicker across the pond (Kobe Bryant's procedures for his knees), but I haven't heard of any groundbreaking neurological procedures that can achieve what Jerzy really needs.

    So maybe we really need a great coach. Pity that Fibak has been taken on by Djokovic. He was a really smart player and understands the subtlety of using the front court much better than most. He obviously needs someone he is comfortable with and would have respect for. I'd love to hear someone like Niki Pilic take an interest in him. Annacone, Cahill, Gilbert and Stefanki are all kind of standard answers. Completely from a distance, I get the sense Janowicz needs a European. Perhaps he could maintain his relationship with Tilikainen, but bring on someone with better feel for the "classic game" like former French Davis Cup captain, Guy Forget. For a real Mutt and Jeff team, another Frenchman who was one of the smartest players ever, had a great drop shot and really understood the front court, the Magician would be a great complement to the Janowicz team. If you want someone Swedish, how about Edberg?!

    Jerzy needs someone really smart who can figure out how to help him take advantage of his weapons and develop his maturity. But he also needs someone he will respect and listen to. That person has to buy into the stroke mechanics that Janowicz has and try to modify and take advantage of them rather than try to turn him into another "windshield wiper" topspinner with a bigger serve than most. He has the ability to play the front court like no one else I can think of that has his power, not to mention his reach. Isner, Anderson, Karlovic and the rest - none of them have the ability to both react to a passing shot and make a good volley and make a decent return of serve off both sides, much less move quickly to a corner and make a pass. Querry is pretty good with his groundies, but his backhand is weak and he can't volley under pressure. As Stotty says, Jerzy can actually trade off the baseline with the best of them, but not nearly as consistently as they do. What makes him better is converting the opportunities and advantages his groundstrokes create to transition to the front court; he can do that better than any of the other big players. Combine that with the opportunities his serve creates and you have tremendous pressure on your opponent to hold serve. Now you push forward just a little more often instead of trying to hit so many outright winners off returns and I think the pressure cooker would work!

    I'm sure I'm right about this. But so what...

      And the questions are...

      Nadal vs. Janowicz? What kind of impression can Jerzy make?

      I saw the first set after the tennis_chiro alert. He couldn't sustain the magic to close out the first set. He made an impression though...he is not afraid of Nadal and he told him as much. "See you next time", he said as they shook hands.

      Gasquet vs. Nishikori? Samurai time?

      I saw a bit of this as well. Richard is becoming a very classy player with some toughness...great to hear that Grosjean is in his corner now. He was a very, very nice player...very, very tough too.

      Ferrer vs. Simon? Too much Battery? Energy?

      Too much.


      Raonic vs. Berdych? klacr?

      Interesting first set tie-break...then he closed him out nicely. Happy anyone?

      Federer vs. Kohlschreiber? Cabbage Kid time?

      Not this time. Federer making a bit of a statement. What a great round this next one is going to be.

      Dimitrov vs. Del Potro? Be a man about it?

      "The Kid" manned up. His eyes are open and he is starting to believe in himself. He went toe to toe...and he sliced and diced. He's got the game...but once again he faltered just a bit with the serve. Potentially this guy has all the pieces to the puzzle...somebody please put the last one in place.

      Wawrinka vs. Almagro? Swiss cheese?

      Almagro turned into the cheese. Wawrinka looking tough...looking moody. His motivation is really high against Djokovic. Who does the court surface favor?


      Isner vs. Djokovic? America?

      Djokovic is measuring his steps to London. He is a calculating mission man. He's been around the world a number of times now and he is showing it. Experience and wisdom. He has really matured and forged himself into a great champion. Wawrinka would really like to take him down...how important is it for Djokovic to hold him off here in Gay Paris?

      Good questions....don't you think so? The answers? Foregone conclusions.

        The problem is sustaining it over the entire match. There is so little time in between the transition from backcourt to net...over the course of the match the net rusher is going to get a bit more fatigued in the long run thus making it increasingly more difficult to get in position to volley those dipping bullets.

        Trust me...nobody would like to see this happen more than you and I but the physical reality is that the game is too fast. Reduce the racquet size to 75 or 80 square and the tide will turn. But that isn't going to happen. I turned one of my ambitious adult lady students on to the LiveScoreHunter site and she said only one thing..."they play too fast". I looked at her in appreciation.

            That's right licensedcoach...you cannot slap at every ball...every night. What are you going to do if the A game is not there on a given night. Do you have Plan B? What Jerzy lacks is flexibility...and the funny thing is he potentially has all of the shots to play any game. But the big weakness overall that I see is the backhand as it inhibits his style of play. Two handed backhands are not necessarily conducive to coming to the net...historically speaking. Why not one handed? Too late now.

            You are right too...he need to be a man about it. His temperament is rather childish. It's almost difficult to see him in a real dog fight...snarling, biting and scratching every point from start to finish.

              I am certain you are right too...about all of it.

              I have been reading everything that you have to say about Jerzy since he sort of burst on the scene exactly one year ago. You are right about everything. You were right too about that scene in Miami when he imploded...I was hoping for passion but what we saw was childishness.

              But he has come a long way in a very short time too...as you point out. So I will just sit tight and watch him for another year. A big word in my book is loyalty so I am content to see him stick with what got him to this point. This guy in his corner may be a big stabilizing force in the young man's hectic life. But those names that you mentioned are all good. The one that you didn't is a favorite of mine.

              John McEnroe. Jerzy has a lot of McEnroesque qualities potentially. Perhaps Johnny Boy could be hired as a consultant on how to harness that rawness...how to blend it into something more flexible in it's conception. Jerzy needs a little comic relief in his game as well. We could call it the Jerzy and Johnny show.

              But you are absolutely right about everything. In fact...I could see hiring you as a consultant as well.

                Just watched recording of Federer/Kohlschreiber

                I just watched the recording of Fed's match with Kohlshreiber. First time in a long time I've seen him close out a match like the old Federer. 75% first serves. Didn't drop serve once. Served out both sets rather routinely. Match against Delpo in about 5 hours will tell a lot. I saw a quote from Roger today that it is the first time since February that he has felt really good.

                Also be really interesting to see what Wawrinka can conjure up against Djokovic. I expect that to be the highest quality match of the day.

                Kyle, TBerg has to handle Ferrer indoors here. Ferrer is defending champ, but TBerg is also a former champ. These conditions look pretty quick. If Thomas is going to threaten breaking into the top 4 he has to win this match.

                Nadal and Gasquet. Richard has never done that well in Bercy or Roland Garos. Lot of pressure. Nadal looked good against Jerzy today, but the fact the ball is so different against Gasquet may help the Frenchman. On the other hand, Richard's ball is going to look slow to Rafa.

                  Quick, yes... but a little too frantic?

                  Although we can all agree Jerzy is quick, I found his movement against Nadal last night a little too frantic. It actually let him down. He was often caught dashing on top of the ball and he didn't have the composure to get in position for shots that I thought he could have. I believe this is the reason rallies broke down so quickly as they did. You are always going to feel pressed when playing Nadal, but I just found Jerzy over did it. There were key moments when he had more time than he seemed to realise. Composure would have made all the difference on many of those points. Yes, he needs a little "Sweden" about him here.

                  I thought Jerzy made the occasion BIG. I really enjoyed the atmosphere he brought to the court. I haven't experienced that in a new player for a long time.

                      I was a perfect 8 for 8 in the Round 0f 16. Not sure How good I'll be for today's quarterfinals...

                      I see wawrinka, Federer, Nadal, Berdych in the semis.

                      Should be a fun day of tennis.

                            That Federer - Del Potro Match was something. The 3rd set was a rollercoaster with 3 straight breaks of serve.

                            Djokovic was just too good for Wawrinka. Nadal match was predictable and result was not a surprise.

                            Berdych-Ferrer....Berdych....Ooof

                            Semi-Finals Tomorrow

                            Federer vs. Djokovic
                            Nadal vs. Ferrer


                            Federer-Nadal final? Could it happen? What does Federer need to do to beat Djokovic. What does Ferrer need to do to prevent what we all assume will happen? He is the defending champ.

                              Two out of four ain't bad. Two out of three is better...unless you are talking about the one that you love as Meatloaf laments. What a great performer this guy was. Check out "Like a Bat Out of Hell" someday.

                              But with regards to the Paris Indoors. Nadal vs. Ferrer. No possible mistakes there. Federer vs. Djokovic. If they are playing on the level...there isn't much wiggle room either.

                              Notice how I didn't mention any names. I never get it right. Love...too, always perplexes me. My poor heart...railroad tracks. I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door...she packed her bags and turned right away.

                                Just like a tennis coach...neglecting to praise. Outstanding prognosis in the round of sixteen. Amazing though that you can go eight for eight...then only two for four. Predicting wins from the round of sixteen on can get a little dicey. What is going to separate two contestants on any given day?

                                The eight for eight performance at the Paris Indoors itself is worth a mention from Robbie Koenig. By the way klacr...what did he say about you? In your typical humble personna you neglected to mention...but I am curious. Care to share with us.

                                I thought that Berdych would have taken out Mr. EverReady Energizer Bunny as well. He would have stood a better chance against the other Spaniard in the next round.

                                It's been a wonderful tennis tournament so far...oddly enough or not it could very boil down to the usual suspects. I hope that it does and that they punch themselves out for next week allowing "The Once and Future King" to once more steal the crown.

                                Come on Roger...or not. The wily veterans know what is best for them. He may feel that a quick beating then a jet home to lick his wounds in Switzerland for 48 hours before hightailing it to London for the big fight. One never knows...
