  • Junior Development: No Americans in Top 20

A post on Robbie Koenig's Facebook page got me to this article from Chris Lewis. He has some very well thought out arguments about what is wrong with the approach of the USTA and I agree with most of what he says. I think the ROG mandate is a good idea for the under 10s because it is the only way to get it to be adopted. Here in LA, I can't even refer anyone to a place within 20 miles of where I am that has a legitimate TAUT program that really gets lots of kids actually playing on the smaller courts which is the primary goal of ROG. I am so tired of seeing foam balls being used sparingly or in the same old fashion of lining the kids up and having them wait their turn to actually hit a ball. The whole idea is that they actually play. It means someone has to do a little work to set up the nets and lines, but you can really accomodate a lot of kids and the videos I've seen of small kids actually playing on the 35' and 60' courts really impressed me. Setting up one small net on a court with 8 kids on the court or using the QuickStart equipment to do the same old drills is not what ROG is all about.

But except for that little rant, I am very much in favor of everything Chris Lewis is advocating in this blog post(please go to the top of this blog):

I wonder what some of you think!
