  • Thoughts about followthrough and physics.

A sidestep to the field of physics. At the very moment when the ball has left the strings of the players racquet, nothing the player does can effect the ball. Now with this in mind let us all ponder a moment the many followthroughs of (Federer, and etc.).

    Ideas, comments, appreciated.

The followthrough can't affect how the ball is hit, but what happens before contact can. Since the followthrough is usually a result of what happens prior to contact, how about considering the differences in what is happening then?

Right. The path of the racket at contact--the movement and speed in 3D space--determines what happens to the ball. The followthrough determines what the path of the racket is at contact. The human body can't instantly change the speed or direction of a racket in the hand--the contact is a reflection of a continuum--that's why it's critical and also an indicator of what type of ball was struck.
