Yeah...he's quirky alright. I love him...I love old guys who have not lost their nerve to speak up. Speaking truth to power. What a novel idea these days. Damn right! FDR probably knew. I have always wondered about that dubious pair...Bush and Cheney? A couple of real living room warriors.

Great article, Phil. I read your comment without my glasses and thought that your 93! was 931. Is he 97? Great character, Gardnar. Intestinal fortitude. I would be curious to hear his thoughts on modern tennis...and tennis in the past.

I am working backward now from Don...you bet he was tough tennis_chiro...20-18 in the fifth. That's tough. I wonder how he did in the singles that year. Back then all the players were playing the doubles too, trying to pick up another check! No longer...the case. Bless you for weighing in on the WARS...War, what it isn't good for, absolutely nothing!

True character

Maybe my impression that the majority of veterans who fought in WWII, Korea and even in Vietnam feel exactly the way Gardnar Mulloy does about war is a little off the mark. But I am sure there are at least a great number of them who feel that way. And yet the sentiment expressed there seems like such a minority view and is rarely expressed.

As a World War II veteran, I cannot understand those who approve of President Bush’s insane invasion of Iraq. Apparently they are blind to, or haven’t felt firsthand, the horror of the dead and battle-wounded. Unfortunately, it is those safe from harm’s way, who have not or will not do the fighting, that influence others to risk their lives with “Go get ‘em—I’ll hold your coat!”
Far from the action, the gullible American public does not realize or remains blissfully unaware that heroic wounded soldiers, soaked in their own blood and perhaps dying, lie in dirt screaming in agony. Pity the tired, homesick, and loyal soldier. He is constantly under dangerous pressures. He rarely bathes or has a decent meal and seeks protection as best he can, sometimes in a building he has destroyed. He is ordered to trudge weary miles with blistered feet carrying a rifle and heavy backpack, always with the fear of being killed by an unseen enemy as miserable as he is.
However, war’s worst scenario is the millions of suffering, defenseless civilians—men, women, and children who are bombed out of their homes, killed, and wounded or who become starving refugees. Meanwhile, our leaders who cause the carnage spread war’s “glory” by proclaiming that God is on our side as they remain out of harm’s way. At the same time, our government pays endangered soldiers peanuts and shamefully allows rampant and unabated war profiteering.

I can't understand why senior citizens are such a feared constituency when it comes to messing with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, but when it comes to voicing their considerably more experienced opinion about getting involved in war, they are seemingly silent.

I had always heard Mulloy was one tough SOB to play against, but a classic old school kind of a guy. It's great to hear he was/is such a great believer in human rights, everybody's human rights!
