    Simple Backhand Volley 101

Hello everyone how are you doing?

For backhand Volley I teach student 2 hands...
there are several reason for this

    1) more power with two hand--easier to handle the pace
    2) if ball is wide or soft you can still let go the hand... so you can also use one... when you need it...
    3) well, main reason is more power... I see many students having trouble with backhand volley... when I ask them to use two hands.. they get great
support and pace increases very much

below picture Kimiko Date demontrates this... Fabrice Santro another great exmaple of having two hand volley for both wing and one of the best hand in business... Kimiko Date has great volley also....

            Simple CHOKE 101

WARNING :There is great section call Mental Game.. that is to me number one section...
So.. again..my idea isn't really solid or qualify and if you seeking real info.. you go that section please...

To me tennis is 100% mental... my instractor once said.. "your style of tennis is all most depend on your personality.. are you a risk taker or non risk taker..." I sort of believe this....

Simply this is how choke.. (Arm get so tight )happens.. first of all.. if there is some of of limitation.. we get tight.. if there is limitation.. baseball pitcher Smaller it get.. more choke happens... or if there is some of hear.. like if you are playing golf and you are at tee with driver.. there is person you like is watching you want to impress that person and you get nervous and you get tight. Well tennis.. yes.. we have to hit the ball in certain area... IF we change the tennis game rule to like this.. who can hit the tennis ball farthest.... yes maybe you get nervous by going competition.. but I do believe less people choke for this contest... I played football... and was reciever... through out football career i have never choked... I can run okay and catch okay and there were 100's of people were watching... boy if i play tennis in front of 100's of people.. i can't imagine that... anyhow.. we choke because we have limitation.. that's why our arm get tight... and of cource.. fear of losing .. being nervous automatically make our body tight.. and feels like you are holding 100lb racket.. feels so heavy.....

To me Term Choke means Get tight... tennis is difficult sport... when you hit the ball your have to hold the racket tight... otherwise ball will push your racket... however... most of time we get tight way before we hit... i mean we are tight before we hit the ball... let me summarize

            1) We are already tight before you hit... like you are hitting 2nd serve and 30-40 and 5-6 if you miss this and you lose the match.. you are tight way before you hit the ball...
            2) For my way of cure----moving your feel all the time... making sure your arm is loose...
            3) Practice---similate this type of situation over and over.. if you miss this serve then you run 20 laps... and give you pressure..
            4) Practice to relax... not many people practice to relax...
            5) Especially your wrist, shoulder, forearm are very tight.. whole body has to be loose...
            6) There is no practice for not getting nervous.. I don't care who.. you get nervous when match is intense...
            7) Nervous doesn't mean you can be loose... you can still tell your body to be loose
            8) Hold the grip very very loose.. almost like you drop the racket..
            9) this sounds crazy.. but learn hit theb all with very very loose grip.....
some instractor ask student to hold tight when you hit.. i am big against that because this has chance arm to get very tight for under the pressure...

            10) Be like a Tennis Machine-- This one... my favorite thing to do.. and I saw this in Mental Game section.. Never worry about outcome... oh man what if I miss this.. and if you think this way you will miss.. 100%... Be like tennis machie.. you hit with certain racket head speed and correct technique and certain looseness.. everything is already pre-set... just like ball machine.. if you set to 40mph then ball machine shoots like that.. ball machine never choke because machine doesn't have emotion.. it can go wrong but never choke... when I play like this.. i play my best tennis.. I write the script how I should play and stick with it.. no matter what... and I feel easy that way....

            A) Loose arm.. check always your arm is loose.. hold the racket very ver loose
            B) hit like machine... loose and hit with right technique..with certain racket speed.. never worry about outcome.....
            C) But again.. nothing is more important than being loose... loose way before you hit... if you are tight before you hit.. you will hit the ball tight..

My biggest Advice is ... Hold the racket extremely loose and for the practice try to his with same looseness.. you will see you can contact the ball so clearn... and soon as you contact the ball.. you can tell ball will be in or not...

                Answer to the Question

Hello Hollybobo..thank you fo rthe post... well.. just answer to the question...
hope... and I really hope you are just asking this simple question.....because last post.. you got bored with my posts...

Anyhow... since it is simple question I will be more than happy to answer that...

Well, I teach mostly private class.. and I have some groups class.. and I teach about more or less 50 hours a week.. mostly private so you can kind of figure how many students I teach....

Warning Again... following is my view of teaching tennis.. and bit long.. so no bother if I did answer your question...

Well...I believe this field is sort of wide open.. it mean if you are in right area and teaching for while you get fair amount of students.... Sad part is you actually do not have to be very very good teacher to get many hours... just be in right place and do well with people and of cource if you are allright at teaching and you do pretty well... But I believe mainly if you do well with people then you do well... And as I mentioned how long you are teaching is also key... because student will bring other student to you.....

Okay... this is bit off truck...... how do we decide good instractor... honestly when I start teaching tennis, I felt I am doing great and I know everything.... well.. i was working hard as well... then when you get older thing changes.... you deal with many different people and you get more experience... many ups and downs.... It is very ironic that I was very very against short backswing when I start teaching..... Nobody taught me loop when I took lessons.. and I got loop when I watch other player... I felt strange... why my backswing is low to high and others look more nicer.. and go up and down... then When i start teaching.. i told myself .. this is how people has to learn...
then I was doing it for 4 years.. loop only.. forehand and backhand... well.. things are allright......loop forehand and backhand... then I see too many students are just choping the ball.. I mean they bring racket up then they hit the ball down from high position and this was just terrible.. and there weren't just one but many.... And when i teach the loop... their arm gets so high and most of time they hit the ball so late since their loop was out of control and I was find out when I ask kids the loop their grip get more western... it is due to pointing the racket face to other fence... it is a lot easier to point racket to side fence when you have semi or western grip... anyhow.. these are the main reason why I stopped loop... oh yes..And one insident also happen to me.... Well.. I do not want to say the exact name.. but I met this person who is father of well known WTA player... I won't say who she made to Quarterfinal on Wimbledom... Anyhow... he was with his son.... and he was training him.... and he was nice.. we said hello and next thing he said to me "What do you think my style of teaching.?" and he dropped his racket low
and he said "it is classic" I said "well.. most instractors don't like that nowadays" He said his duaghter took lesson from Robert Landsorp...and he said he took the notes every single lesson.... Father wasn't actually tennis player but he applied Robert teaching to his son and son was hitting the ball just so beautifully.... so clean and simple.... He said "my son is hitting like this since he was 5... and he never took lesson from other instractor... " I was amazed... well, this can be done... very simple and can be very effective....

Well, those are some of the main reason why I have changed my method of teaching...

And quickly about open stance.... open stance is great... you need it but... if student does not learn how to use this correctly.. they will never transfer the weight correctly... open stance weight transfer isn't as easy as it look.... pros do this so easy.. they life up their right foot when they make contact not only up but moving your weight forward... can my student do that? haven't found any yet... well.. I guess I just don't know how to teach correctly...

Anyhow... i will continue article some other time... it can just go on and on and on......

                    Simple Wrist Angle 101

This Section I would like to show you how the wrist angle should be fefore you hit the ball.. this is another "Element" every good tennis player have....

As you can see the picture below.. mr federor and my instractor's wrist angle is exactly same... my instractor does hit a lot more flatter than federer does.. but both have same angle before the contact.. this is very important for the shot..
                    1) this indicate your wrist is very loose
                    2) Racket head never pass your wrist before the contact... it comes late...
                    3) I teach this porcess by hitting tennis ball with palm.. not with racket.. or tell student to feel like hit the ball with handle....

This process is extremely important.. if you do not have loose arm then forget it.. it won't work... if it is tight your racket passes your wrist very quickly and most of starting player does this all the time.. their racket face comes first before the contact....
