For some reason the large version will not play for me while the small version does. I would like to see that on the full screen as I have not done so yet.

It is a really remarkable sequence...most remarkable in the sense that it truly illustrates a very important aspect of the forehand...the footwork by "The Maestro" himself. With the accompanying music it is a treasure that I never tire of studying, listening to and referring others to. Pure Platinum. Solid Gold.

Spin variation on ATP tour

As more stats randomly dribble out from Hawk-Eye, one tidbit we're seeing is spin information on players that aren't normally quantified.

I was surprised to see that two of the flatter-hitters on tour, Delpo and Marcel Granollers, while they regularly hit forehands at about 1,500, both hit approach shots around 3,200 RPM in recent matches -- what we're been trained to see as "Rafa range".

I found the Delpo stat particularly interesting, given his old-fashioned grip and discontinued, heavy racket.

My question is vague. John, do you have any thoughts on the range of spin hit by the ATP pros? Is Nadal's spin less extreme than we've been led to believe by the constant din of TV announcers?

Isner Serve Impact Point.

Have you ever seen anyone hit their serve as far into the court (by that I mean make contact with the ball as far in from the baseline) as John Isner? I haven't heard analysts talk about that. Perhaps because it is yet another of those things you simply can't see with your naked eye.

I made a crude attempt on these 3 photos to estimate the impact, and I get about 4 feet in. He hits at about the same height as Raonic, but at nearly three-times as far into the court, by my estimate. Karlovic, doesn't make contact at the same height, nor as far in as either {although he hits a much flatter ball, which is another discussion}.

The only guy I can think that approaches this is a hacker from Courtside Club that, at a pro-am charity event, ran three steps into the court to hit, and he probably didn't get in as far .

On the spin yes it is a range. On the road but Rafa ranges between 1500 and 5000rpm. Measured a Federer one almost as high like 4800.

Most of the shots tend to cluster around the averages but it makes perfect sense that spin varies with speed, angle, arc, depth, contact height, etc.

Isner Shoulder Rotation on Serve.

In your latest newsletter, you mentioned the severe, interior shoulder rotation John Isner demonstrates on some of his serves (from my set of pics).

Here's the closest I've been able to find from my completely unscientific and incomplete survey of my own photos <g>.

Surprise (to me, anyway) Rafael Nadal. How much he rotates his shoulder varies widely, but look at this one. Palm is facing almost-straight up. Amazing someone that is so muscular, can also be so flexible.

Since this thread is like the game show Jeopardy! and all responses must be framed as a question <g>. John, how would you rank Rafa's shoulder rotation, and any thoughts on my suspicion that he varies it an awful lot? Thanks in advance.

Some seem to vary much more than others. I can't say at this point I have an answer. Big research study project that is somewhere on the list...
