  • That would be a hard one to answer. I doubt Milos was a nobody. He probably came up thru the ITF tournaments like all the top pros, but I don't know what his numbers were.

Obviously he has a huge game. We've looked at his serve already in the Forum:

We'll eventually put up his whole game in the Archives. But watching him play in person the other thing that is apparent with him is how calm and positive he stays in tough matches.

    • John,

If you do get a chance to film Milos, perhaps you can get some footage of his backhand return.

It's his big weakness IMO, and maybe you could compare his technique to other top returners and see if you can find any technical flaws. I'm actually not sure if his problem is technical or tactical ( ?stands too deep and not fast enough to cover the next shot to his forehand corner) but it would be interesting to look at.

The article might turn out like the article you did on Roddick's backhand, which turned out to be incredibly instructive.

      • GS,

Good idea. We've been slowly building up our footage of him.

The human eye is 20 fps, about. The contact is 1/250 of a sec. The human eye is about 10 times too slow to see what really happens. But 250fps video has the ball on the strings on every shot. 500fps even better.

Just wondering about the human eye idea. Is that scientifically proven? I was just researching it on google and like tennis technique there seems to be a lot of debate about it on a couple of different sites I checked out!

Also, Happy New Year, hope you had a great christmas and hears to a great year of tennis and tennis research/study!

            John,

I was thinking of buying Motion Pro. Isn't that the software you use? I'll assume it's a good product if so. Let me know...

            Dartfish is great but expensive...

            • Stotty,

Before you spend any money , have a look at Kinovea which is a free open source software which can do many of the things that Motion pro and Dartfish do.

              • Jon,

I am not an eye doctor that's just what I have been told by experts.

                Stotty, Glenn,

I just use Quick Time--for side by side you don't really need anything else.

I am sure that I can see the ball on the racket at contact. But, I cannot see the detail that can be seen when I am watching again in high-speed.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I'd like to be able to measure angles...and overlap one clip over another. It's all about speed. When you have dozens of students, you need to be able to cut, paste, add lines and circles, and edit darn quick...a purpose-build product is what I need...something dead easy is to use. Not sure Quicktime can do all I need.

                    • Stotty,

Nope if you want lines and circles, etc then it's not QT. So far as the cut and paste though definitely. QT Pro that is. This is the same program for downloading the archive files on the site.

                      • Flip for backhand?

                        Dear Mr Yandell,
                        could you look at

Does it make any sense to talk about "Flip" for backhand?
                        Thank you

                        • Not sure. Brian G. will eventually be getting into that so I am going to leave that for him to explain. Once I understand what he thinks maybe I can answer...

Forget about that YouTube footage--look at the incredible stuff in the High Speed Archive! You can see dozens there that bear on this point and see the flip frame by frame...
