John,
Would players who use a continental grip on their forehand be more likely to have a straight arm on contact compared to players with more extreme grips? Or are grips insignificant in the straight arm versus double bend debate?
Any idea if their is a key factor in the development process that triggers a player to become straight arm?
Sorry if the questions seem naive. I couldn't find any articles that provided any answers, though there are so many in the archive that I could well well have missed something.

Great question. The obvious answer is at the right moment in a way that is effective depending on level.
In pro tennis this is difficult to impossible in many or most circumstances. It isn't possible to generate enough pressure to overcome the speed and weight of the passing shots.
At the level of 99% of the tennis world the slice approaches on both sides with accurate, competent volleys can a winner. Or relatively flat or heavier topspin drives, followed by volleys or swinging volleys.
Training should be progressive. Simple lower level difficulty to create and insure technical competence, followed by backcourt point games, practice games, sets, matches, etc.Last edited by johnyandell; 04-04-2014, 09:28 AM.

Help with this please?
How would you train your player to decide when and how to attack a 3/4 length ball?

John, do you have any plans for adding Sam Stosur's kick serve to the Stroke Archive?

Greg,
Thanks for kind words. I think I may have found it for you. Check out the February 2010 interactive forum/issue. Hope that is what you are looking for.

I appreciate your offering of direction, and looked throughout that section. The video I'm specifically looking for is 1/4000 frame rate (or something crazy like that) showing only a close up of the racquet/hand coming to the ball from the knife position and then opening up for contact and pronate through. I'm beginning to think I'm going crazy and confusing it with the great Novak slo mo vid. The stuff in the sections you mentioned will greatly demonstrate, the other just has in my mind a little more dramatic effect.
I really appreciate the assistance, and love your contributions to the website/forums!!!

It's a rare piece, was going to use it to demonstrate and can't find it. Thought I had saved it, but apparently not!!! I'm guessing you had a great time at Indian Wells, though didn't see any pics of you with tennis starletts this time...did I miss those posts?
It's on my bucket list to come spend time with you there one year!
