    thanks!

:Im a demoted 14s champ who just turned 15 (I started playing tennis when i was 14) I play everday for 3 hours minimum (serious time not including messing around haha) and I have one lesson a week. I recently played a 16s ZAT and got to the quarters and im pretty confident that im about to champ up again in the next month or so. I think it would be best for me to send you footage of my strokes for your stroke or something like that so u could analyze it and if you could that would be fantastic. I really want to take my game to a level like ITF(sorry if it sounds cheesy but I REALLY WANT TO BE A GREAT TENNIS PLAYER) thx for everything and your site is great

Also, you said rafa hits sidespin? if so does the reverse help with this? Expand on this please?

    SK,

First how old are you and what level are you playing? The path to improvement has many steps, so those facts are a place to start.

I think that the double bend vs straight arm debate is about the cherry on top of the whip cream. By that I mean that unless the more fundamental issues are square it is pretty much irrelevant.

Which brings us to extension. Read the Extension and Rotation articles in the Advanced Tennis section. I think the concept is pretty clear in those.
Extension is how far forward the swing extends toward the opposite side on a given shot. Spin comes partially from rotation of the hand and arm.

As a lefty the main advantage is the left wide serve in the ad court. You should practice that religiously and study the lefties in the archives.

The extreme lefty tactic is the reverse forehand/sidespin of Nadal.

Hy, I was wondering if u could answer a few questions.

Hy, im a serious junior and hope you could answer a few things.

1.I am a consistent player but take risks(counter puncher i guess) and I need to improve, fast. If you could tell me the steps i could take then that would be very helpful. I would like to take my game as far as it can go.

2.Based on statistics, does the doublebend or straitarm on the forehand produce more powerful forehands. or is it just preference?

3.Could expand on "extension" because im trying to hit it much harder now because if i want to get any where i will have to be able to have a heavier ball.

4.Im left handed and was wondering if you could make any strategies for lefties.

Thanks ur site is great and help me improve everyday

Just find a similar one in the stroke archive and count there. The fps is indicated at the end of the file name. that alleged boot is not always present as you will see.

The time spent in the boot shape loop

    Saying differently:
I was hoping to get the time spent on the "boot shape" loop in

My original question was about time between the start of the boot and the contact

PS I do NOT fps so the counter at the video is useless
    Thank you

what is the time between the ready position and the contact

    Hi,
what is time between the ready position and the contact?
See the related post from TW below
    Thank you

OK I spoke with Andy Fitzell and he asked me to post to say that the video of Roger that he and Vic filmed at IW does not show racket acceleration continuing into the follow through.

One thing to remember is that he is shooting at 30 frames per second with cameras a significant distance from the players. This is different than the rigorous academic work of someone like Brian Gordon or Bruce Elliot who are filming at 240 frames a second or more.

Nonetheless his conclusion is that just prior to impact the racket is traveling at 68mph.

One tenth of a second later it is at 52mph and at this point the arm and racket are coming across the body.

One tenth of a second after that, with the racket wrapping back over the shoulder it is traveling at 22mph.

Something like that. I don't time it but that's probably close!

    John,

When you do a video lesson how do you breakdown the usage of time?

    For example:

    In a one hour lesson
    10% warm-up
    10% set-up
    20% video
    20% Analysis
    40% Practice

    Thanks

Congrats! There a few funky bugs but basically these cameras are awesome at the price (or even twice). Some of our recent high speed footage was shot with them and for the web the resolution is great.

    Camera

    Hi John,

Thanks for the advice about the camera. I was able to find a new Casio FH-100 (that has the manual shutter control) on ebay. It is coming from Japan, from a highly ranked seller, so hopefully, I will not have any problems.

    Guys,

Let me just say that I have mixed feelings about Steve Jobs...Giancarlo is in Swtizerland visiting his mom...let me see if I can get him to post something when he gets back--he's been all thru this and it just makes my head spin. Hard enough trying to translate Brian Gordon...

I have had similar problems in the past with my Macbook Pro. Most clips I have downloaded will play on the version of Quicktime Player the Macbook Pro came with (my macbook is 3 years old). But some clips will only play with the older version of Quicktime Pro for some reason. I was prompted by the software to download the older version of Quicktime Pro which I did...now I can play every clip. I also have VLC which will play every clip also...and any problem clips that other software has trouble playing. VLC is a must to have on your desktop just in case some clips won't play in Quicktime, Media Player, etc...VLC will usually do the job and is a handy back-up.
