Watched the Safin vs. Lapenti match this afternoon--or the 3rd set, anyway. Safin goes up 4-0, gives back a break...then gives back another one. Late in the set his forehand just absolutely went away; he couldn't find the court with it.
He ended up whipping his rackquet into the base of his changeover bench. It snapped in half, just above the grip. Never seen that before.
Had at least one match point with Lapenti serving, very late in the set. But couldn't take it home. So the set goes to a tiebreaker.
Safin goes down 4-0 in the tiebreaker, works his way back to 5-6, and he's serving. He wins the first point. Now it's 6-6 in the breaker. And he DOUBLE FAULTS! Unreal!
A Korean Tae Kwon Do master I used to know had an expression re: people who are physically talented but not so smart: "Million-dollar body. Nickel brain."
One of the more entertaining tennis matches I've seen in a long long time.
