Nick loses the 1st set to professional tennis player qualifier McKenzie McDonald. Nick just does not look like a professional tennis player out there any more. Shocking, or not.

Nick came back and won in 3, much to my chagrin. Eubanks goes out to Opelka 1st round. Opelka serve is just overwhelming, He won every single point off 1st serve in 2nd set. HIs serve is right there with Karlovic and Isner to me, but he definitely has more game other than the serve than those 2.

Fonseca vs Tien looked like a very entertaining match, 2 young guns to watch. Fonseca has been in the news already but Tien has shot up quickly, beat Medvedev the other week. I'll be at the matches all next week, looking forward to it.

Carlos Alcaraz out early yet again, this time to 34 yo David Goffin. Carlos' potential ascent to being the best player in the world continues to be two steps forward, two steps backwards. Carlos has a proclivity for being beaten by players who are a tier below him. Carlos had Zverev's number two ranking in sign and slipped on a banana peel.
Goffin came from behind 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, which makes him 2-1 vs Carlos.
Again, the key was Carlos underperforming on his own serve.
Goffin: "I think it was key to be aggressive from the return, especially on his second serve," said Goffin, who won 45 per cent (15/33) of his second-serve return points. "Sometimes he hits the target on the first serve and you cannot do anything. The key was, even if I missed, I had to be aggressive. Because otherwise, if I'm just too passive, then he has his forehand or... he has everything. If you're too passive, then you're dead."
Goffin won 17 of his 24 net points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, while Alcaraz committed 43 unforced errors — including 28 on the forehand wing that also let him down against Draper in Indian Wells.
Other upsets already include Meddy out to Munar in straight sets, Michelsen out to Lucky Loser Carabelli.
WTA Side: Ex Houston player Ashley Krueger upset former Wimby champ Rybakina, then Leyla Fernandez. The 6 ft 1 in Krueger seems to be making a move.
Vekic out to Masarova, Baptiste upset Kasatkina.
Wow! There is tennis life in Raducanu after all! Upset Navarro. seeded 8, for two (2) count em wins in a row.

Here's an insane stat: 2021 - Emma Raducanu wins the US Open 2025 - Emma Raducanu records her first career top 10 win on hardcourt.
7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-6 (3) victory over No. 10-ranked Emma Navarro Friday.

While we're on a less sane path, this is about was as close as one will get to winning every stat while losing the match.
Shelton loses to a younger player, 20 yo from Hong Kong. AND Ben won the set determined by a break while losing both tiebreaks.

The schedulers at Miami took incompetence to a new level. They had Fonseca scheduled on Grandstand. All the Brazilian fans were already in there in anticipation of his upcoming match, and the Schedulers decided to move the match to the stadium, which prompted a chaotic scene with all of the Brazilian fans immediately booing and leaving the Grandstand to go to the Stadium. A whole new level of stupidity. They seem to absolutely have no clue to what is going on.

19 year old Alexandra Eala, is on the verge of following up her upset win over Ostapenko, up a set and a break, now serving 5-2 over Madison Keys.
Update: The teen broke Keys at love to win in straight sets. I didn't watch, but Eala won a higher percentage of her second serves than Keys, still a pretty good server and our recent Aussie champ, did on her first serve.
Here's Eala's WTA bio at this link. Of course, Andreeva was only 14 yo then and Eala was 16 yo; two years makes a bigger difference then.
Update: I did not know this ... "Eala won the 2022 US Open junior girls title -- beating Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. Yes, the same 17-year-old Andreeva who won the WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells and is ranked No. 6."

He seemed quite happy returning Humbert's serve to the ad court from a fairly deep position and moving out wide. Amazing how he can leave that much court open yet still his a big backhand and recover to middle. You have to be an hell of an athlete to do that.
