  • Acapulco upsets

What's become a standard tune-up for Indian Wells, Acapulco draws a fair number of top ATP players.

So far, we've had Learner TIen upset Zverev, Ben Shelton go out to old David Goffin, and Fokina out Frances Tiafoe.
Shapo continues recent resurgence topping Alex Michelsen, Holger Rune retired.

ATP on TIen: "he 19-year-old used his tricky lefty game and brick-wall consistency to lure the top seed into uncharacteristic errors, including a routine overhead that Zverev missed while down break point at 3-4 in the first set. Tien maintained his composure throughout the clash, tallying five consecutive games from 1-4 in the second set to seal the one-hour, 28-minute victory. ... The teenager is the youngest American man to record a victory against a top-three opponent since Andy Roddick in 2001. The lefty is up to No. 68 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Machac wins his first title in an event marked more by food poisoning than tennis, as Casper Ruud, Tommy Paul and Holger Rune all went out with stomach ailments.
Zverev also seemed out of sorts, whether that was the food, or the officiating isn't clear. One of the quickest to serve on tour got a time violation on his very first point vs US teen Tien.

ATP: "Tomas Machac sealed a milestone week in Acapulco on Saturday when he claimed his first tour-level trophy at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC. The 24-year-old, set to make his Top 20 debut in Monday’s PIF ATP Rankings, defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6(6), 6-2 in a heavy-hitting final.
