The sport with no off-season ramps up for 2025 with the United Cup 2025 team competition already underway in Australia before the new year, as the AO swing starts. Held in Perth and Sydney with 18 singles and 18 doubles matches, combining WTA and ATP, sort of Hopman Cup meets Davis Cup.

The United States team won the United Cup for the second time, beating favorite Poland in the finals late last night PST. Coco Gauff beat Iga Swiatek in a milestone upset for the young American and Taylor Fritz topped Hubi Hurckaz making the concluding mixed doubles unnecessary.

On hand one, it might not seem such a huge upset. Afterall Coco is ranked third in the world, Iga is now second. But Coco's record against Iga was a miserable 2-11 coming with Iga having won the last 5 in a row in 10 straight sets. That Iga won only 55% behind her own first serve is a head shaker. There are some questions about her fitness coming in, there were a lot of matches and theirs was physical, but this was straight sets in less than 2 hours. Coco has to now be one of the favorites at the Australian Open, if she wasn't already, and Fritz considered a strong contender behind the lead dogs.

Here's a link to 4:32 minutes of highlights from Coco-Iga via TennisTV on YT. And here is a write-up on WTA's site.

People scoffed about Coco firing Brad Gilbert and replacing him with a near-unknown "grip expert".
