  • Self-Published Book: "Tennis Players As Works of Art"

One of my photos of Daniil Medvedev appears in an unconventional book that is about to be published, "Tennis Players As Works of Art" by David Linebarger.

This is not technical, biographical nor historical; it's philosophical, pairing artworks spanning numerous media, each showing professional tennis players with short essays. I trust this post won't seem overly commercial. I don't get anything further from this, but feel that anyone who puts this effort into a creation and goes the self-publishing route, deserves a leg up. So, a link to the amazon listing.

From the author's description: "Imagine Roger Federer's tennis as a classic Greek sculpture and Rafael Nadal's as prehistoric cave paintings. Picture Lady Pink, the first lady of graffiti, painting Serena Williams. How many ways can a tennis player be a work of art? ... Each short piece in this collection is creative, lyrical, insightful, and occasionally surprising. Through Linebarger's narrative and the artists' visions, readers will discover a new lens through which to view tennis-a sport elevated to the realm of cultural and artistic significance."

Cover by Ronaldo Alves, book by David Linebarger, published by Atmosphere Press, sold on Amazon.com.

An update: Independent Book Review named Tennis Players as Works of Art as one of the “Best Books We Read in 2024.” It was the only sports book on the list. Here is the review: Like a museum exhibit in a book—an impressive collection of art and prose celebrating tennis.

"It took seven years for David Linebarger to assemble this collection of nearly seventy artworks by over forty artists, all directly connected to the sport of tennis. Each one is augmented by a brief page or two of original writing, with some quotes and excerpts creatively sprinkled in.

"This book packs in a lot. Facts and biographical information mix comfortably with emotions spanning joy, anger, sadness, frustration, and even pathos. The common thread is a reverence for a sport anyone can play that comes across as genuine, not sentimental.

"Tennis Players as Works of Art is as rewarding as an absorbing museum exhibit, without having to leave your sofa or armchair. And not just for tennis aficionados.

P.S> By me, might make a good stocking stuffer for the right kind of tennis fan?

Nice article. Tend to agree about Chris Evert's backhand. Probably the most consistent shot ever after Rafa's forehand. I watched her at Wimbledon numerous times— she hardly ever missed a backhand.
