Watched Jannik Sinner vs Tommy Paul last night -- some tremendous shot making. BUT really uneven play. Strangely uneven.

Paul's forehand was en fuego, mixed up serves incl up to 133 MPH, good net play. And fast! Living up to that potential he showed when he was called by some the best of his batch of US men years back. Two thumbs up.

Sinner served lights out on a few key, tiebreak points {he's won 66.7% of TBs in last year}. In between, his patented DTL backhand kept finding the net. Over and over. USO stats are sparse at best, so I can't find BH errors. But it was strange.

And Sinner's serve, averaged over 120 MPH and, again, won key points BUT got only 49% of his first serves in. I can't recall a tournament with sooooo many players -- winners as well as losers -- getting less than half of their first serves in. Early on, there was some wind, but it's even happening with the roof closed. I don't get it. Is it contagious?

Emma really looked good out there taking out a somewhat mentally frail Bedosa. Emma is certainly a better tennis player than Bedosa or Coco. But more obvious, her mental game is just so much stronger than 99% of the other players in the WTA.

Well Taylor won, but I did not win $25,000. I just missed the deadline for getting my bet in. Taylor to me now the favorite to get to the Final. I may bet on it, but probably not.

Incredible run for her. Sadly she would have to beat Sabalenka and then Swiatek to win the whole thing. When Raducanu won she had to beat Sakkari and Leylah Fernandez in the semis and finals. Night and day.

I think she can beat Sabalenka. Iga would be tougher, Iga does not give away nearly as much as most of the WTA players. Could be a battle of the forehands.

I've got my money on you winning!

It's a special gambling pool, sort of like toxic mortgage derivatives where you can buy a packages of packages of bad mortgages and when they're added together they're magically a good investment ! ! ! Well, Citibank said so

Sorry, I was reading a financial column and got carried away.

So, the final woman's match on Arthur Ashe has not even started yet at 7:27 PM ET, and Dimitrov vs Tiafoe is after that.

Insane. Yet another match that could go into AM TOMORROW. Will we have another match like the record setting women's of two days ago? Hard to remember when it's played, when it's scheduled for one day and ends in another

As Pam Shriver recently wrote, that's simply incompetent. It's bad of the fans, it's bad for the players. TV sure as heck isn't getting as many viewers.

US Open and majors in general have to change this.

Looking at the crowds, they must be doing something right I guess. What can be, unburdened by what has been.

Taylor a very solid favorite over Tiafoe with an implied probability of winning at 71%. Sinner has similar odds over Med.

I heard a stat today that Sabalenka's average forehand speed is the highest in the tournament...and that includes the men.

I would be way more interested in her spin rates. But she does hit the ball hard.

Don't have that but definitely the fastest forehand

Telegraph: The world No 2 has recorded average forehand topspin speeds of 129 kph in New York, bettering those of the ‘big three’ of Carlos Alcaraz (127 kph) Jannik Sinner (126 kph) and Novak Djokovic (122 kph).

Maybe it was the pickle juice PED ! ! !

Since Arnya Sabalenka's 80 MPH average forehand speed is generating some attention, it reminded me of when Paula Badosa averaged 82 MPH -- after drinking pickle juice on her bench. Her forehand gained 10 KPH. No, I'm not making this up. It actually generated some controversy and Tennis TV picked it up. From, I think, Australia in 2023. Wonder if there are blood tests for brine?

I am listening to Sinner v Draper on the radio. The commentary is terrible. They spend zero time talking what really matters...just drooling over shots and nothing else. It feels like Draper is spending a lot of time hanging on and that Sinner is gradually taking over.

                              Sinner: fell on left wrist

Draper: threw up twice Both attended to by physios, doctors

                              What scenes

On the radio the drama is unbelievable. Sinner has snapped his wrist while Draper can hardly stand up and is vomiting all over the place. It's like a bad night at A&E.

Is this actually true? Radio commentators do like to dramatise, especially the ones I'm listening to.
