Watched Jannik Sinner vs Tommy Paul last night -- some tremendous shot making. BUT really uneven play. Strangely uneven.
Paul's forehand was en fuego, mixed up serves incl up to 133 MPH, good net play. And fast! Living up to that potential he showed when he was called by some the best of his batch of US men years back. Two thumbs up.
Sinner served lights out on a few key, tiebreak points {he's won 66.7% of TBs in last year}. In between, his patented DTL backhand kept finding the net. Over and over. USO stats are sparse at best, so I can't find BH errors. But it was strange.
And Sinner's serve, averaged over 120 MPH and, again, won key points BUT got only 49% of his first serves in. I can't recall a tournament with sooooo many players -- winners as well as losers -- getting less than half of their first serves in. Early on, there was some wind, but it's even happening with the roof closed. I don't get it. Is it contagious?
