Iva Jovic: Double Dipper
I didn't realize it was possible to enter the main draw AND the juniors. The 16 yo won her first main draw match at the US Open. Then after she lost there, was able to also play in the juniors, which started later, winning her first match there Sunday. Here's a 5 minute video with her on her background. Seems very mature for her age.

I've been equally impressed with Emma Navarro, as well DB. Has levels to her game and can beat you in a variety of ways. I first noticed her when she won the NCAA women's singles championship title while at the University of Virginia. Seems to have adapted to the pro circuit pretty seamlessly.

Bottom pair of women's quarters have interesting match ups.
Q3 - Battle of two women born in New York City - Navarro, and Badosa (Yes, Spanish but born in NYC when both parents worked in fashion). H2H Paula 1-0, IBM odds put Navarro at about 60%, but Paul won (albeit on clay) their only meeting back when her game wasn't back from the back injury yet.
Q4 -Gold medalist Zheng vs Sabalenka - who beat Zheng to win the Australian Open. Zheng was 0-4 on her BPs. Two big hitters.Comment

Frances Tiafoe's greatly improved return credited with his wins of Ben Shelton (who beat Foe here last year) and over Djokovic-slayer Popyrin.
New coach David Witt in turn is credited with Foe's return gains.

It was Tiafoe’s return, an area of his game that he has augmented with new coach David Witt, that took the match off Popyrin’s racket in the early stages. The huge-serving Shelton said on Friday that Tiafoe had probably returned better against him than anyone all year. Tiafoe broke his compatriot five times in five sets in that match. He went after the serve of Popyrin, also a huge weapon, with similar purpose.
"He clinched the decisive break of the first set at 4-4 with some clutch returning, including on the second point of the game, when he stretched out to wide to retrieve a 118 mph delivery that looked to be careering towards the match clock. In the second set, Tiafoe looked out of it down 5-3, 40-0 on the Popyrin serve, but he miraculously manufactured a break out of nowhere.

VAR-Y Wrong Call.
Perhaps you missed this as I did. USO trying "VAR", but system failed at spotting obvious "foul shot" off racket into court on hitter's own side.
{ P.S. Some trolls and flamers are blaming the Brazilian for not calling herself out, but that's silly. I've done this and had no idea what happened. }
AP News: A wrong replay at the US Open leads a chair umpire to get a call wrong on a video review
The U.S. Tennis Association acknowledged Sunday that the wrong call was made on an illegal shot during a third-round U.S. Open match between Anna Kalinskaya and Beatriz Haddad Maia a night earlier because the chair umpire was not shown the relevant replay by the video review official.
“After the review was complete, an additional angle was seen on the broadcast,”
The point was awarded to Haddad Maia. Kalinskaya challenged under a video review system added to some courts at the U.S. Open last year for just this sort of dispute — not in-or-out line calls, but other things such as whether there was an extra bounce, if a player was hindered or, as was the case in this instance, whether a ball went off someone’s racket and landed first on that player’s side of the court before going over the net. That’s known as a foul shot.
McIntyre said this was the fifth use of video review of this year’s U.S. Open. Most players think all tournaments should use that kind of technology to aid chair umpires in making calls.

Quite the first set Zverev vs Morgan Taylor. Very high quality. Jimmy Arias, one of my favorite commentators, pointed out the Fritz forehand has been the biggest groundstroke on the court and that was so true. Fritz has a great backhand also, but still not as good as Zverev's, which is certainly one of the 3 best on the ATP. Fritz wins it in a tiebreaker.
Emma really looked good out there taking out a somewhat mentally frail Bedosa. Emma is certainly a better tennis player than Bedosa or Coco. But more obvious, her mental game is just so much stronger than 99% of the other players in the WTA.Comment
