For those of us into "Young Guns", 19 yo Jakub Mensik beat FAA in straights. {Like many players, FAA had a lot of trouble serving, Rune lost getting 30 something % in. Musetti won getting 30% in over the first two sets.

20 yo Diana Shnaider, subject of a TPN Tour Portrait this summer baked a bagel and a breadstick in her first round. She's seeded 18th when only a few months ago she was a college freshman.

Another player that was a college amateur last summer, 20 yo Ashlyn Krueger won her first round.

And 17 yo Iva Jovic beat Magna Linette, ranked 42.

          Quotes:

'We go to the coin toss, and he took his jacket off, and I was like, 'Dude, this guy is a specimen, this guy is a beast!', like I just couldn't stop looking at his shoulder definition, and the veins...'

-- Li Tu was starstruck seeing Carlos Alcaraz in the flesh. Tu won a set.

"Decide. Do you want to win or not?"
-- Frances Tiafoe's coach David Witt when Frances started to fade in the fourth set on a very humid NYC evening. Supposedly, Frances hit an ace and won the game and match right after.

"I never want to see you in the first round again."

People forget how truly great he was before surgery hampered this game.
I watched his come from behind to beat Roger Federer in a final at Indian Wells, and some of the shot making was astonishing. A backhand cross court pass on a service return from the camera-man's seat behind the ESPN camera (I exaggerate slightly). A 135 MPH serve in the T that had so much kick it nearly bounced over Fed. And on and on.

Yes, he "only" had one grand slam title, but consider what Peak Thiem was doing when he was injured.

This is compiled by Oleg S.

One of Domi Thiem's most powerful stats: his recent H2H against the Big 3 before his right wrist imploded, sounding the death knell of his prime (in June '21).

3-1 vs Nadal (from Barcelona '19)
5-2 vs Djokovic (from RG '17)
            5-2 vs Federer (career)--
I always liked Thiem. His game to me was a lot like Gasquet and Musetti. He had big swings off both sides, very nice looking strokes, but he played most shots to me too deep behind the baseline, just like Gasquet and Musetti. A tough way to play tennis.

I don't remember Thiem being that could, but clearly he was by those stats. I was never much of a fan. He just seemed to tank the ball off both wings and nothing else. He had about three decent years and that was it.

Many would give an arm, or maybe just a wrist, to be that great. Even if has only for a few years

Botic van de Zandschulp has done it! The 74th-ranked player in the world defeated the third-ranked player, shocking Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.

Carlos won only 6o% of his first serves
Nothing against Botic but he ain't the second coming of Agassi.

Very disappointing. Kudos to the 29 year old Dutchman. Maybe, trying to pronounce his name wore down the Spaniard

US Open is known for having more upsets, more one-and-done 'slam winners than the other majors, but this is perplexing. Via Oleg S

I am watching the Tiafoe Sheldon match. Jim Courier is on the call. To me, he is as good as Mary Carillo is bad.

What a nightmare. I joined NOW TV for a month to watch the US Open and then find there only a very limited matches to watch and most aren't live. What are these people on? I managed to get a refund thankfully but I'm still stuck with nothing to watch. What a pain!

Ben fires a 143 MPH ace to win the third set. Hold the phone!

I like both players but would like to see an annoyed Ben Shelton in a rematch with Djokovic, which might be the only competition he gets before the semis, given his cupcake draw.

P.S. Can't believe Foe was 2 of 12 on BPs and Ben 2 of 2. Ouch!
