    Men's draw is up.

Yet again, Carlos and Alcaraz and Medy on one side of the draw. Poor Djokovic all alone.
In fact, again, Sinner and Alcaraz in the same half for the 3rd consecutive Slam with Djokovic on the opposite side.

The main draw of the US Open starts Monday with the order of play at this link. First round matches that stick out to me are:
      • Shelton vs Thiem. Because Ben is fun & former champ and underappreciated great Domi is about to retire.
      • Zheng vs Anisimova. Two sudden upstarts, one the young gold medal winner in Paris, the other the surprise of the year on the women's side, suddenly finding her game again.
      • Perricard vs Etcheverry. Because I want to see if Gio is the real deal. Can he repeat his wonderful Wimby run?
      • Opelka vs Musetti. Cranky serve bot recently returned from a long injury absence. How will he do against the Italian who is very, very good at defusing big servers?

From Chris Carey: Opening Day of the 2024 US Open drew the biggest single-day crowd in event history -- 74,641. The day-session crowd of 42,886 was the second-highest day-session attendance in history, while the night-session crowd of 31,775 set an all-time night-session record.

I wondered the same thing. I am no expert, but I certainly cannot see betting on someone not even in the draw ha.

Planning on Nick getting a Lucky Loser entry from the announcing booth? New regulation?

Dominic Thiem just played his last match in a major. He is reportedly going to retire at a home, Austrian event later this year.

I contend that Dominic Thiem is perhaps the most under-appreciated player on the ATP.
People forget how truly great he was before surgery hampered this game.
I watched his come from behind to beat Roger Federer in a final at Indian Wells, and some of the shot making was astonishing. A backhand cross court pass on a service return from the camera-man's seat behind the ESPN camera (I exaggerate slightly). A 135 MPH serve in the T that had so much kick it nearly bounced over Fed. And on and on.

Yes, he "only" had one grand slam title, but consider what Peak Thiem was doing when he was injured.

This is compiled by Oleg S.

One of Domi Thiem's most powerful stats: his recent H2H against the Big 3 before his right wrist imploded, sounding the death knell of his prime (in June '21).

3-1 vs Nadal (from Barcelona '19)
5-2 vs Djokovic (from RG '17)
                        5-2 vs Federer (career)--

This might be the shot of the 2024 US Open and it's only the second day: Muchova vs Volynets
