Great win for Stef. He played to me one of his better matches. His backhand held up well, very solid. FAA did not appear to have tired legs from his last week tournament win, but his backhand leaked too many errors.

Ugo Humbert, the super talented 26 year old Frenchman, just won a 2nd set tiebreaker to get to a 3rd vs Zverev. He is riding the wave of very raucous crowd. The French definitely love their tennis.Comment

Analyst Mark Petchey just posted "if you bought a night ticket in Paris and work tomorrow you might want a refund".
As I type, Thiem-Rune is 3-3 in its first set at 11:03 PM Paris time. Sinner-McDonald is scheduled to follow -- starting sometime tomorrow morning.
Tennis is the only sport that inflicts this maltreatment on its paying fans. And the players, as well.

Jannik Sinner "wins" at 2:37 AM this morning Paris time, then withdraws from the tournament citing inadequate time to recover before next match and need to be healthy for Turin et al.

Sinner's clash with Mackenzie McDonald did not start until after midnight and his 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-1 win ended at 2:37 a.m., with his third-round tie against Alex de Minaur scheduled for Thursday afternoon, drawing criticism for the organizers.
"I am sorry to announce that I am withdrawing from today's match in Bercy," Sinner said on social media. "I finished the match when it was almost three in the morning and didn't go to bed until a few hours later. I had less than 12 hours rest to prepare for the next game."
Casper Ruud defended Sinner and criticized the ATP.
"Bravo ATP, way to help one of the best players in the world recover and be as ready as possible when he finished his previous match at 2:37 am this morning, 14.5 hours to recover ... what a joke,"

Trying to get in a glass-is-half-full frame of mind today so .... in what seems a lull year for Tsitsipas, he not only just won his 50th match of the year, while qualifying for the year end ATP Tour Finals, but per ATP "Tsitsipas has become one of only two players, male or female, to record 50 or more wins in each of the last three years. Rublev is the only other player to do it with 53 wins in 2021, 51 wins in 2022 and 55 wins so far in 2023".
If you had asked me who are the ONLY 2 players to win 50 in the last 3 years. I'd never have guessed the forehand with a mop of red chair and the Greek-Russian.
Winning an ATP match is something IMHO. Winning 50 in a year. Big Something. Three Times? Super-Sized Something.

Novak slams the door on Griekspoor. He will be happy with the last 8 points but that's about all. A good lesson on how to win a match playing less than your best. How many times have we seen Novak and two other players do that...countless times.StottyComment

Grigor rides his beautiful game into the quarters with a very nice win over Hubie. Having only one of the 3 on tour now a huge plus for Grigor. Like Gasquet, a very bad record vs them, knocked out of big tournaments countless times by them.Comment

Awesome run by Grigor now taking out both Medvedev and Hurkacz.
Grigor from ATP: "Hurkacz struggled to find his rhythm in the first set but fired eight aces in each of the second and third sets as he threatened a comeback victory on Court Central. A break in the seventh game of the decider ultimately proved enough for Dimitrov to clinch a victory in which he clinically converted both break points he earned.
“I became like a stop sign,” joked Dimitrov. “He caught on fire definitely with the serves. I knew what to expect against him, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a break. After the fifth or sixth game in the second set, I was just kind of guessing, but my guesses were all wrong.
“I had to stay very focused and every time I had the opportunity to get into a rally, I had to do something. A few points made a huge difference today.”
