I am watching the football game, and just checked to see the score. Apparently play is stopped for a protest. Here are the stats thus far:

Sabalenka come back vs Keys was pretty amazing.
Keys served for match in second set, lost in two tiebreaks.
Saby was "averaging' 80 MPH on her forehand. That's better than most every man in the tournament not named Zverev (who was averaging 84 MPH in loss to Alcaraz until he came up lame, possibly from his prior 5 setter.)
Here's an odd one I don't understand. While both players were firing bullets off the ground, both were serving far slower than normal. Much of the first two sets, Sabalenka's first serve was down around Martina Hingis territory. She literally threw a racket at her coaches, apparently complaining about the string job. Keys had second serves in the 60 MPH range.
Started to pick it up toward the end of the second set getting a few in the 118 MPH range. Lest anyone blame the "ATP balls", Saby has served 122 MPH at this US Open, and Keys up to 116 MPH. Tight on serve but not on forehands?Comment

Novak clinical in 1st set with one break. He is blocking a lot of big Sheldon rally balls back, just doing what he has to.

A very close match. Both had more winners than errors, 1 point difference in match. Alcaraz 2/13 on break points the most telling stat.Comment

I managed to get access to the women's final. I hadn't seen either girl play much before so it was pretty new to me.
I think Gauff is the best female defender I have ever seen. She ranks equal to Nadal in her ability to fish balls back from the extremes of the court and keep asking her opponent to put the ball away one more time. She was quite magnificent in defense yesterday.
I am not sure Gauff's forehand is as weak as many are saying it is. It's not great but I have seen far, far, worse. I find her a little haughty. She reminds me a little of Stephanos the way she struts around.
Interesting the fastest player in the women's game (Gauff) and the fastest in the men's game (Carlos) have daffy duck feet. Back in my day slightly pigeon-toed players were alway the quickest.
Sabalenka's tactics were woeful. Really dumb. If Gauff's forehand is the weakness people say, then pepper it, don't play relentlessly to it and play the shot in. Give her junk and low slice. I doubt Sablenka has another game to her bow. It just seems like she has two gears: flat out...and even more flat out.
Glad Gauff won. She is infinitely more watchable than Sabalenka.StottyComment

Novak completely clinically dialed in winning the 1st set, showing all his skills. Inimitable hitting posture on all shots off both sides, hugging the baseline to take away time, and very serviceable volley skills.Comment

Nice article with very little to disagree with. He is certainly right about Novak's technical brilliance. For me it's the key separator between Novak and the entire rest of the field. Novak is so balanced and technically superb that his shots just hold up so well in the most pressurised and critical moments.Originally posted by stroke View PostStottyComment
