IMG Dumps BJK's tournament, Sells San Jose
As rumored, IMG sold the event rights for the Silicon Valley Classic WTA tennis event, a tournanment founded by Billie Jean King and the longest running women's only tennis tournament to the billionaire that runs the D.C. ATP event. It's an ironic pairing since Citibank aka DC had a women's event which went under and was closed, with the event slot moving to Europe.
Coming after the "export" several years ago of the old California Tennis Championships aka ATP's San Jose SAP, run for decades by Barry McCay, to Rio via Memphis by a group of VCs the entire San Francisco/ Bay Area will be without a professional tennis tournament for the first time in 134 years.
Meanwhile, the WTA calendar recently added back the "Asian Swing" including the year end round robin, or "Elite" event, now in
